3 Mistakes in India’s World Cup Squad: The Third One May Cost the World Cup

When Team India won the World Cup in 2011, Zaheer Khan was India's best bowler. In the 2022 T20 World Cup, when India reached the semi-finals, Arshdeep Singh was the best bowler for India. However, despite that, India has not decided to include any left-arm pacer in the squad.

Team India revealed its 15-man squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023, and the team selection is not sitting well with the fans, who are furious after seeing their favourite cricketers not making the squad. Notably, Sanju Samson, Yuzvendra Chahal and Arshdeep Singh have missed out on making the squad for World Cup 2023. Social media is buzzing with slogans and criticism for BCCI after the squad announcement.

Suryakumar Yadav, who averages only 24 with the bat in ODIs, was selected ahead of Samson. Axar Patel, who is not getting a single game in the presence of Jadeja, is preferred over Chahal, and Shardul Thakur, who has failed to impress with his all-round abilities in ODIs, is selected over Arshdeep Singh. Somewhere,, you feel that India has missed a few tricks, which will again cost them the World Cup.

3 Mistakes that Can Cost India the World Cup

1- Exclusion of Sanju Samson and inclusion of KL Rahul

KL Rahul has battled with an injury for over six months, and he was suddenly drafted into the World Cup squad without any notice. On the other hand, Samson has performed well in the middle order in ODIs and is definitely a better keeper than Rahul. This decision, based on past performances could surely cost India the World Cup.

2- Not including Yuzvendra Chahal

Team India has selected only one leg spinner, Kuldeep Yadav in the World Cup squad. Chahal has failed to make the squad as Axar Patel has also been given a go. However, in the presence of Ravindra Jadeja, Axar is hardly getting any games and will surely not be a key player for India in the World Cup. India could have gone with Chahal in place of Axar in the squad.

3- No left-arm pacer in the squad

When Team India won the World Cup in 2011, Zaheer Khan was India’s best bowler. In the 2022 T20 World Cup, when India reached the semi-finals, Arshdeep Singh was the best bowler for India. However, despite that, India has not decided to include any left-arm pacer in the squad. Almost every team in the World Cup has a left arm quick that can rattle any opponent. Starc is there for Australia, Boult for New Zealand, Shaheen Afridi for Pakistan and so on. This is definitely the biggest mistake that can cost India the World Cup.
