4 Batters Who Achieved Consecutive Centuries in the Indian Premier League

Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli Join Elite Club, Showcasing Unstoppable Batting Brilliance

The Indian Premier League (IPL) stands as the pinnacle of T20 cricket, bringing together the finest talents from around the world. Initially, skeptics doubted the frequency of centuries in this fast-paced format, but time and again, the batters have shattered those expectations with extraordinary performances. From Chris Gayle’s monstrous hits to Brendon McCullum’s electrifying knocks, the league has witnessed awe-inspiring displays of batting prowess.

Among the many remarkable feats in T20 cricket, scoring back-to-back centuries stands as one of the most challenging tasks. Since the inception of the IPL in 2008, only a select group of four batters have achieved this remarkable feat, etching their names in cricketing history.

1) Shikhar Dhawan – IPL 2020

Shikhar Dhawan, a seasoned campaigner in the IPL, became the first player to achieve consecutive centuries in the league during the 2020 season. Representing the Delhi Capitals, Dhawan’s majestic form propelled his team to victory on one occasion and delivered an outstanding individual performance in another.

Dhawan’s unbeaten 58-ball 101 against the Chennai Super Kings in Sharjah set the stage for a resounding triumph. Following that remarkable innings, he continued his extraordinary run by unleashing an unbeaten 61-ball 106 against the Punjab Kings in Dubai. Although the latter innings came in a losing cause, Dhawan’s back-to-back centuries etched his name in IPL history.

2) Jos Buttler – IPL 2022

Rajasthan Royals opener Jos Buttler may have endured a challenging season this year, but in 2022, he etched his name in IPL folklore by achieving four centuries, including two consecutive ones. Buttler’s pyrotechnics with the bat captivated fans and left opposition bowlers reeling.

The Englishman kick-started his remarkable streak with a blazing 61-ball 103 against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Brabourne Stadium. Just four days later, he unleashed another stunning innings, scoring a scintillating 65-ball 116 against the Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium. Buttler’s feat remains unique among foreign players in the IPL.

3) Virat Kohli – IPL 2023

Shortly before Gill’s sensational back-to-back centuries, Virat Kohli, the epitome of consistency, also accomplished this rare feat. Kohli’s first century of the season came against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he orchestrated a majestic knock of 100 runs from 63 balls, guiding the Royal Challengers Bangalore to victory in a high-pressure chase.

In the subsequent match against GT, Kohli’s brilliance shone yet again. His unbeaten century of 101 runs from 61 deliveries propelled RCB to a competitive total of 197/5. Despite his valiant efforts, the Titans emerged victorious, but Kohli’s back-to-back centuries cemented his status as one of the greatest IPL batter.

4) Shubman Gill – IPL 2023

Shubman Gill, the latest member of this esteemed club, has taken the IPL by storm in the ongoing season. Displaying remarkable skill and temperament, Gill notched up his maiden century against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in a commanding innings of 101 runs off just 58 balls. This stellar performance propelled the Gujarat Titans to a resounding victory.

Undeterred by his initial success, Gill continued his scintillating form against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. His unbeaten knock of 104 runs from 52 balls showcased a masterclass in power-hitting, leading GT to chase down a daunting target of 198 runs with five balls to spare. Gill’s extraordinary hitting left RCB bowlers gasping for answers.
