England ex-captain's innovative stroke play steals the spotlight in the first Ashes Test match

On the fourth day of the opening Ashes game at Edgbaston Stadium, Joe Root unleashed a display of unorthodox strokes, hitting two consecutive reverse scoops off Scott Bolland’s deliveries.

After losing two early wickets on day 3, England started day 4 with a determined Root leading the charge. Under the influence of the Brendon McCullum era, Root has incorporated a significant change in his batting approach, seeking to score runs at a rapid pace.

Play resumed with the fifth ball of the 11th over, which had been interrupted due to rain the previous day. Root’s first attempt at a reverse scoop on the opening ball fell short. Undeterred, the 32-year-old batsman successfully executed the newly added reverse-hit shot on the second delivery, collecting ten runs off Bolland’s two balls.

Root’s scorching form was evident as he scored a remarkable 118 runs off 152 balls in the first innings, including seven fours and four sixes.

During the over against Bolland, Root amassed a total of 14 runs with three reverse scoop shots. Alongside his partner Ollie Pope, Root accumulated an impressive 43 runs in the first five overs of day 4, further asserting his dominance.
