Why is Dinesh Karthik retiring?
Dinesh Karthik was not picked for the New Zealand T20 series as the selectors went with Rishabh Pant and Sanju as their wicketkeeper options. So does that mean Karthik’s career is on the verge of ending after the World Cup? Chief selector Chetan Sharma said that Dinesh Karthik was not picked to manage his workload issue although for the next edition of the world cup they are looking forward to a different setup.
Dinesh Karthik makes a heroic and inspiring comeback at the age of 37. This veteran wicketkeeper-batsman even made his commentary debut last year when India toured England but later he impressed the selectors with his finishing skills for RCB and managed an epic comeback in the Indian side. And after that, he didn’t look back and got a call-up for the Asia Cup and World Cup both. But the question is what will happen to him after the T20 World Cup?
The next T20 World Cup will be held in 2024 in the West Indies and Karthik will be 39 years old. Dinesh Karthik is presently the part of T20 World Cup and also played three matches ahead of Pant who played in Australia and also has a good record under his bag. Some cricketing legends questioned the place of Karthik over Pant, after India’s loss to South Africa Sehwag added “When did Dinesh Karthik last play in Australia? When has he played on such bouncy wickets? This isn’t a Bengaluru wicket. I said this even today that Pant should’ve been in the team instead of Hooda, Pant has the experience of playing here. His Gabba innings are a legend.”
Although his father had an interaction with The Indian Express Dinesh Karthik’s father Krishna Kumar hinted that this might well be his last presence as an India Player. As per Krishna Kumar, he feels it’s a miracle that he’s seeing his son playing for his country at the age of 37, and the addition of him to the team for the 2023 ODI World Cup will only be a bonus for him.
Karthik’s return back as a T20 finisher in team India is because of his unbelievable strike rate of 220.00 for RCB during the slog overs in the tournament this year with a mammoth avg of 80 in slog overs.
