In 2017, Jonny Bairstow penned a biography titled “A Clear Blue Sky,” co-authored with Duncan Hamilton. This book delves into the profound loss of his father, David Bairstow, at an early stage of his life. It also chronicles his journey from that painful loss to the momentous achievement of scoring his first test century, where he looked up to the sky in tribute to his dad, seeing “a clear blue sky,” which inspired the book’s title.

Jonny Bairstow Early Career

In 2008, Bairstow played second-XI cricket for Yorkshire and scored 308 runs at an average of 61.60 in six championship matches. He was later called up to the first-team squad for the final County Championship match against Sussex but didn’t secure a spot. Despite this, he signed a two-year contract with Yorkshire.

Moving into the 2009 season, Bairstow initially played second XI cricket but earned a promotion to the first-team match with Somerset due to Michael Vaughan’s injury. Making his first-class debut, he top-scored in the second innings with an unbeaten 82 and took over the gloves, securing four catches.

In 2010, Bairstow became a regular in the Yorkshire team, playing 16 first-class matches and scoring 918 runs. Although he averaged over 40 for the second consecutive season, he couldn’t convert his eight fifties into a maiden century. His performances earned him a spot in the England Performance Programme squad for the 2010/11 tour of Australia.

Taking the gloves for the 2011 season, Bairstow started impressively with the bat, scoring his first century (205) against Nottinghamshire in May. He emerged as the only Yorkshire batter to surpass 1000 runs that season, leading to his call-up to the England one-day squad.
