Beginning his county cricket journey in 2008, Wood had his debut for Northumberland against Norfolk in the MCCA Knockout Trophy. His stint in Minor counties cricket extended from 2008 to 2010, during which he made three appearances in the Minor Counties Championship and three in the MCCA Knockout Trophy.

The transition to Durham occurred in the 2011 season, where he marked his first-class debut against Durham MCCU and his List A debut against Northamptonshire in the 2011 Clydesdale Bank 40. Subsequently, Wood continued to contribute to Durham, making additional appearances in first-class matches against Sri Lanka A and List A matches against Scotland in the Clydesdale Bank 40. His talent was recognized as he debuted for the England Lions during their 2014 tour of Sri Lanka.

Venturing into franchise cricket, Wood joined the Chennai Super Kings for the 2018 IPL season, securing a notable contract worth INR 1.5 crores (~£160,000). In the 2022 Indian Premier League auction, he was acquired by the Lucknow Super Giants, but an unfortunate elbow injury ruled him out of the tournament.

The trajectory of Wood’s franchise cricket endeavors continued as he was bought by the London Spirit for the 2022 season of The Hundred in April 2022. This move further added to his experiences in various cricketing formats, showcasing his versatility and appeal in the T20 arena.
