Dane Paterson’s cricket journey began with his inclusion in the Western Province cricket team squad for the 2015 Africa T20 Cup. He continued to make strides, earning a spot in Bloem City Blazers’ squad for the inaugural season of the T20 Global League in August 2017. However, Cricket South Africa’s decision to postpone and later cancel the tournament interrupted his momentum.
Undeterred, Paterson joined the Cape Cobras team for the 2018–19 season in June 2018, followed by representing Western Province in the 2018 Africa T20 Cup. He emerged as the leading wicket-taker for Western Province during the tournament, making significant contributions with seven dismissals in four matches.
Paterson’s talents were recognized further when he was named in Paarl Rocks’ squad for the inaugural Mzansi Super League T20 tournament in October 2018. He played a crucial role for the team, finishing as the joint-leading wicket-taker with ten dismissals in eleven matches.
Continuing his domestic cricket journey, Paterson was named in Western Province’s squad for the 2019–20 CSA Provincial T20 Cup in September 2019. He later transitioned to Eastern Province’s squad for the 2021–22 cricket season in South Africa, showcasing his versatility and adaptability.
On the international stage, Paterson’s career saw several milestones. He made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut for South Africa against Sri Lanka on January 25, 2017, followed by his One Day International (ODI) debut against Bangladesh on October 15, 2017.
