Despite setbacks, his talent was recognized when he was named in Jo’burg Giants’ squad for the inaugural season of the T20 Global League in August 2017, although the tournament was postponed and later canceled.
Undeterred, Hamza continued to make strides in domestic cricket, earning a spot in the Cape Cobras team for the 2018–19 season and later representing South Western Districts in the 2018 Africa T20 Cup, where he emerged as the leading run-scorer for his team with 102 runs in four matches.
In April 2021, he returned to Western Province’s squad for the 2021–22 cricket season, showcasing his resilience and determination. On September 24, 2021, during the opening fixture of the 2021–22 CSA Provincial T20 Knock-Out tournament, Hamza achieved a milestone by scoring his first century in T20 cricket, amassing 106 runs.

He marked his Test debut on January 11, 2019, against Pakistan, setting the stage for a promising international career. His leadership skills were acknowledged in May 2021 when he was appointed as the captain of the South Africa A team for their tour to Zimbabwe. Hamza’s exceptional performance in the first unofficial Test match against Zimbabwe A in June 2021, where he scored an unbeaten 222 runs, further solidified his credentials as a top-tier cricketer.
In November 2021, Hamza transitioned to the One Day International (ODI) format, making his debut for South Africa against the Netherlands on November 26, 2021. However, his career faced a setback in March 2022 when he tested positive for furosemide, a prohibited substance, following an ICC anti-doping test conducted in January. Hamza accepted the outcome of the test, agreeing to a voluntary suspension before being provisionally suspended by the ICC. Despite this setback, he was recalled to the South Africa A squad for their tour to Sri Lanka in April 2023, signaling a potential resurgence in his cricketing career.
