With only a short time left for the start of the Champions Trophy, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced an updated squad ahead of the tournament, which is set to begin on February 19. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out due to a back injury and has been replaced by young pacer Harshit Rana. Additionally, leg-spinner Varun Chakravarthy has been included in the 15-member squad, replacing Yashasvi Jaiswal. The BCCI has named Mohammed Siraj, Shivam Dube, and Yashasvi Jaiswal as reserves.
Final Squad Submitted to ICC
As per ICC regulations, all eight participating teams had to submit their final squads by Tuesday, February 11. The BCCI has confirmed its 15-member squad with two changes, dropping Jasprit Bumrah and Yashasvi Jaiswal while including Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy.
Bumrah’s Injury a Major Blow for Team India
Jasprit Bumrah was originally included in India’s provisional squad for the Champions Trophy last month. However, he missed the England ODI series, which was India’s final assignment before the tournament. Bumrah sustained a back injury during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney and has not played any matches since. His absence is a major setback for Team India, as he was expected to lead the pace attack.
Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy Get a Debut Chance
Both Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy made their ODI debuts against England in the ongoing three-match series. Harshit Rana made his debut in the first ODI in Nagpur and has played both matches so far, impressing with his performance in the middle overs. Meanwhile, Varun Chakravarthy was also given an opportunity in the series after performing well in the five-match T20I series against England.
India vs Pakistan Clash on February 23
India is placed in Group A of the Champions Trophy, along with Pakistan, Bangladesh, and New Zealand. Due to security concerns, India will play all its matches in Dubai under the hybrid model, as the team refused to travel to Pakistan for the tournament. The Champions Trophy will feature eight teams and 15 matches over 19 days. One of the most anticipated fixtures, the India vs Pakistan group-stage match, is scheduled for Sunday, February 23.
