A major update has emerged regarding the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025). If the government gives the green signal, the tournament could resume in May. For this, the BCCI has shortlisted three cities — Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad — where the remaining 16 matches might be held.
Recently, due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the IPL was suspended for a week on Friday. However, it’s still unclear when a final decision will be made regarding the tournament’s resumption.
According to a report by Cricinfo, although BCCI has kept Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad ready to host the remaining IPL matches, given the current situation, restarting the tournament soon appears difficult. Teams were informally told on Friday that the IPL might be postponed further. Several franchise officials believe that the remaining matches may now be held towards the end of the year.
One of the biggest challenges in resuming the IPL in May is bringing back the foreign players. As soon as the suspension was announced, players started leaving their teams and returning to their home countries. By Saturday, most foreign players would have left India.
The franchises are still hopeful that if the IPL resumes by the end of May, most foreign players might return. However, if the matches are played after May 25 (when the final was originally scheduled), it may not be possible. The reason is that many players will be involved in their national bilateral series around that time. Also, the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final between Australia and South Africa is set to begin on 11 June at Lord’s in England.
57 Matches Completed in IPL 2025, 58th Match Interrupted Midway
So far, 57 matches have been completed in IPL 2025. The 58th match, played on 8 May between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) in Dharamshala, was halted after 10.1 overs. It’s still undecided whether this match will be replayed or resumed from where it was stopped. Before the interruption, Punjab Kings had scored 122 runs for the loss of 1 wicket in 10.1 overs. Priyansh Arya had smashed 70 runs off 34 balls, including 5 fours and 6 sixes. Prabhsimran Singh was unbeaten on 50 from 28 balls, while Shreyas Iyer remained not out on 0.
Now, only 12 league stage matches are left, followed by 4 playoff matches. According to the previous schedule, Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator were to be held in Hyderabad, while Qualifier 2 and the Final were scheduled for Kolkata.
