Ashes 2023: ‘We’ll Go a Little Harder..’ Brendon McCullum on England’s ‘Bazball’ Approach Despite Defeat in 1st Test

In the first Test at Edgbaston, England surprised many by declaring their innings at 393/8 on Day 1.

After a loss in the first Test of the Ashes 2023, Brendon McCullum, the coach of England, stated that his team will continue with their aggressive Bazball approach in the second Test against Australia at Lord’s. Despite their defeat, McCullum believes that England missed out on a victory by a narrow margin and intends to go even harder against Australia in the upcoming match.

In the first Test at Edgbaston, England surprised many by declaring their innings at 393/8 on Day 1. However, Australia responded with a score of 386 in their first innings. England faltered in their second innings, getting bowled out for 273, while Australia successfully chased down a target of 282 runs on a rain-affected Day 5 to secure a two-wicket victory.

McCullum attributed the close defeat to a lack of luck and expressed confidence that England would maintain their strategy in the second Test. He believed that their style of play was validated despite the outcome of the first Test. McCullum stated that with a bit of luck, the result could have been different.

The coach emphasized that England would continue to put pressure on opposition teams and approach the game with confidence. Despite the loss, the team is proud of their efforts and aims to seize opportunities to dominate their opponents.

“We always want to try to take the game forward. We want to try to seize opportunities where we think we can put opposition teams under pressure,” McCullum added, highlighting England’s aggressive mindset going into the Lord’s Test.
