Ashwin Picks Next CSK Captain and He is Not Jadeja

Ashwin says Ruturaj Gaikwad could be the next CSK captain

In the twilight of his illustrious career, MS Dhoni ensured that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) continued their trademark performance, clinching victory over defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) final. The cricketing icon’s social media post confirmed his participation in CSK’s title-defense for the upcoming season, leading the Yellow Brigade in the 2024 edition.

As the anticipation builds for the IPL 2024 mini-auction, CSK has strategically released players, including Ben Stokes, Dwaine Pretorius, K. Bhagath Varma, Subhranshu Senapati, Ambati Rayudu, Kyle Jamieson, Akash Singh, and Sisanda Magala. While Stokes opted out to manage workload and fitness, key players like Moeen Ali, Deepak Chahar, Devon Conway, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Ravindra Jadeja have been retained.

Ashwin, discussing CSK’s auction strategy on his YouTube channel, suggests the team’s focus on re-signing all-rounder Shardul Thakur, recently released by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He further predicts Ruturaj Gaikwad assuming the captaincy, succeeding Dhoni, who took charge again in IPL 2022 after Jadeja’s departure from the top position.

Addressing potential gaps in leadership, Ashwin notes, “The holes that CSK will try to fill are ones of captaincy, which I believe Ruturaj Gaikwad is going to take over, as Ambati Rayudu said in his latest interview.” Ashwin highlights CSK’s inclination towards experienced leaders, emphasizing the potential return to Shardul for a balanced team combination.

CSK, known for strategic moves, will target overseas all-rounders and fast bowlers at the mini-auction. The release of Stokes and Rayudu has bolstered CSK’s auction purse to INR 31.4 crore. Under Dhoni’s seasoned leadership, CSK has triumphed five times in the IPL, claiming titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023.

Looking ahead, Ashwin speculates on CSK’s considerations for a replacement keeper for Dhoni and potential retentions. He hints at ongoing discussions within the team, stating, “Actually, there were so many rumours in the air that CSK was going to trade this player to see him as a future successor to MS Dhoni.” Acknowledging CSK’s thoughtful approach, Ashwin refrains from disclosing specific names, recognizing the team’s strategic mindset.
