Shreyas Iyer’s availability for the Asia Cup 2023 remains in doubt as he continues to struggle with back pain, even after undergoing surgery. The talented batsman, seen as a crucial part of India’s plans for the World Cup 2023, is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). However, he has refrained from providing a specific timeline for his return.
Speaking to an online news agency, the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders expressed uncertainty about his comeback, stating, “Whenever I walk back from training, there are people waiting outside, wanting to take pictures. And they all ask, ‘When are you coming back?’ I don’t know myself when I’ll be back.”
Shreyas Iyer encountered a back problem during the fourth Test match and has been sidelined since then. His absence extended to the IPL 2023 and the World Test Championship as well. Following surgery in London, he has been undergoing rehabilitation. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has expressed concerns about his slow progress in recovery.

Although Iyer has resumed batting in the nets, he still has lingering complaints of back pain and is believed to be some distance away from regaining full fitness. As a result, Shreyas was not considered for the IND vs. WI series, and it appears likely that he will also miss the Asia Cup.
The BCCI official acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Iyer’s availability for the World Cup, stating, “Iyer’s progress is slow, but we remain hopeful that he will recover in time for the World Cup. However, at this moment, his participation is not certain.”
