Azmatullah Omarzai, born on March 24, 2000, began his cricketing journey by making his List A debut for Mis Ainak Region in the 2017 Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One Day Tournament on August 10, 2017. He later stepped into the first-class format with his debut for Speen Ghar Region in the 2018 Ahmad Shah Abdali 4-day Tournament on March 25, 2018.
In September 2018, he was part of Paktia’s squad in the inaugural Afghanistan Premier League tournament and made his Twenty20 debut for Paktia Panthers in the 2018–19 Afghanistan Premier League on October 7, 2018. In December 2018, he represented Afghanistan’s under-23 team in the 2018 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup. His selection for Afghanistan’s squad in the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Bangladesh followed in November 2019.
The young cricketer’s talent was further recognized as he was named in Afghanistan’s T20I squad for their series against Ireland in February 2020. His progression continued when he was included in Afghanistan’s One Day International (ODI) squad for their series against Ireland in January 2021. Azmatullah Omarzai made his ODI debut for Afghanistan against Ireland on January 21, 2021.
In March 2021, it was confirmed by the Afghanistan Cricket Board that he was under consideration for the T20I matches against Zimbabwe, pending the resolution of visa issues. Subsequently, in February 2022, he earned a spot in Afghanistan’s T20I squad for their series against Bangladesh. He marked his T20I debut on March 3, 2022, playing for Afghanistan against Bangladesh.
