India, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, suffered a heartbreaking defeat against Australia in a crucial ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Sunday. The loss to the defending champions has put India’s chances of reaching the semi-finals in jeopardy.

Australia batted first and posted 151/8 in their 20 overs. India started their chase well but crumbled under pressure in the final over, ending at 142/9, falling short by 9 runs. Harmanpreet top-scored with a valiant 54 but was left stranded at the non-striker’s end for much of the final over. With this victory, Australia secured their place in the semi-finals.

Can India Still Qualify for the Semi-Finals?

Yes, India still has a chance, although the path has become more difficult. Currently second in Group A, after wins over Pakistan and Sri Lanka, India remains in the race.

New Zealand, sitting third in the group, holds the key to India’s fate. If New Zealand defeat Pakistan in their final league game, they will qualify for the semi-finals. However, if Pakistan pulls off an upset, India can still progress thanks to their superior Net Run Rate (NRR) compared to New Zealand.

India’s hopes now depend on Pakistan’s performance.
