Cricket World Cup 2023 Rules: Tied Match Result, DLS Method, Innings Break, Fielding Regulations

ICC ODI World Cup 2023 Rules and Regulations

The 2023 edition of the cricket ODI World Cup will feature ten teams, with a format that includes a three-year qualification phase to determine the participating teams. These rules differ slightly from other cricket formats. Below, you can find an overview of the World Cup 2023 Rules.

In the 2023 World Cup, the match will consist of two sessions, each lasting 3.5 hours, separated by a 45-minute break. Following the toss, team captains will announce their playing 11.

Bowlers will be limited to bowling a maximum of 10 overs, with exceptions for rain-reduced matches, ensuring no more than one-fifth (20%) of the total overs per innings.

Regarding fielding restrictions and powerplays:

  • In the first 10 overs (mandatory powerplay), the fielding team can have a maximum of two fielders outside the 30-yard circle, promoting aggressive field placements.
  • Between the 11th and 40th overs, four fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle, permitting a choice between attacking and normal fielding setups.
  • In the final 10 overs, the bowling captain can position up to five fielders beyond the 30-yard circle. All three types of fielding setups (attacking, defensive, and normal) can be utilized during this phase. These powerplays are referred to as P1, P2, and P3, often displayed on modern scorecards.

If both teams score an equal number of runs when the second team loses all its wickets or uses up all its overs, the match is declared a tie, regardless of wickets lost.

In case of a tie, a super over will be bowled for knockout and final matches.

In situations where weather conditions cause a prolonged interruption, the match will be rescheduled to its reserve day (applicable only to semi-finals and finals). For games without a reserve day, the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method will be employed to determine the winner.
