Dean Elgar Career

In 2006, Dean Elgar led the Under-19 Cricket World Cup team in Sri Lanka. Currently, he contributes to both the Northerns and Titans cricket teams in major South African competitions, including the 2015 Africa T20 Cup with Northerns. A noteworthy achievement came on 23 March 2018, when he became the second batsman, following Desmond Haynes, to carry his bat through an innings three times in Test cricket history.

In March 2021, Cricket South Africa announced Elgar as South Africa’s Test captain, succeeding Quinton de Kock in this leadership role.

His Test debut against Australia on 30 November 2012 saw Elgar scoring a duck in both innings. Despite this challenging start, he redeemed himself on 12 January 2013, scoring his maiden Test century against New Zealand. Following Graeme Smith’s retirement, Elgar secured a regular spot at the top of the order in Test cricket.

Elgar’s prowess continued, evidenced by his innings of 103 against Sri Lanka on 16 July 2014 and a notable 121 against West Indies at St George’s Oval. This ground became significant for him, representing almost half of his career international test runs and hosting the most fifties in his impressive record.

On 28 December 2015, Dean Elgar made history as the first South African opener since Gary Kirsten in 1997 to carry his bat in a Test innings, finishing unbeaten at 118 against England.

In the first Test against Australia at Perth on 5 November 2016, Elgar’s notable innings of 127, along with a partnership of 250 with JP Duminy, marked South Africa’s highest partnership in Perth, the third highest overall in the city, and their second highest against Australia.

Further solidifying his Test prowess, on 11 March 2017, Elgar became the first South African opener to face 200 or more balls in both innings of a Test against New Zealand.

In a match against India on 27 January 2018, Elgar achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first South African to carry his bat twice in Tests since 1992.

The momentum continued on 23 March 2018, as Elgar carried the bat for the third time in his test career, scoring an unbeaten 141 against Australia in the third test. This achievement equaled the record with Desmond Haynes of West Indies and made him the only batsman to carry his bat in an innings of a test match twice in a single calendar year.
