Dean Elgar Likely To Take Retirement from Test after India Series – Reports

Dean Elgar set to retire from the longest format of the game after Test Series against India

South African batter Dean Elgar is reportedly contemplating retirement from Test cricket following the conclusion of the upcoming home series against India. With the T20I series underway and the Test series scheduled to commence on December 26, this decision could mark the end of Elgar’s illustrious Test career. According to reports, the left-handed opener is inclined towards retirement due to uncertainties about his inclusion in Test coach Shukri Conrad’s long-term plans.

Dean Elgar Likely To Take Retirement from Test after India Series - Reports

Dean Elgar, a seasoned opener, made his Test debut in 2012 against Australia in Perth. Over the course of his illustrious Test career spanning more than a decade, the 36-year-old has featured in 84 Tests, amassing over 5000 runs. His contributions include 13 centuries and 23 half-centuries, making him a pivotal figure in South Africa’s Test setup. While Elgar has represented South Africa in eight ODIs, his focus and impact have predominantly been in the Test arena.

One of the primary factors contributing to Elgar’s contemplation of retirement is his perceived exclusion from the long-term plans of Test coach Shukri Conrad. Despite displaying consistent performances, Elgar is reportedly uncertain about his future in the Test squad. The veteran opener is currently the leading run-scorer in the domestic competition, having amassed 402 runs in six innings for Titans at an impressive average of 80.40.

Reports suggest that Dean Elgar was expected to lead a South African team during a two-Test series in New Zealand in February. However, discussions with Cricket South Africa did not unfold as expected. Proteas coach Conrad is reportedly considering Neil Brand, captain of South Africa A, as the potential opening batsman for the New Zealand series. If Elgar decides to retire ahead of the series, Tony de Zorzi might partner Brand at the top of the order.

Dean Elgar’s potential retirement marks the end of an era for South African Test cricket, as the seasoned opener has been a consistent performer and leader on the field. The decision, if finalized, would bring down the curtains on a remarkable Test career that saw Elgar playing a crucial role in South Africa’s batting lineup. As the cricketing world awaits an official announcement, the forthcoming Test series against India becomes even more significant, potentially serving as Elgar’s farewell to the longest format of the game.
