Delhi Capitals have ended their partnership with Ricky Ponting. In such a situation, Delhi Capitals is looking for a new head coach for the IPL 2025 season. Sourav Ganguly is also present with the team, but the Delhi Capitals franchise is not going to hand over the responsibility of head coach to him. Even Sourav Ganguly himself is keen to become the head coach of the team, but the owners of Delhi Capitals are looking for someone like Gautam Gambhir.
Sourav Ganguly has not yet appeared in the role of head coach. After leaving cricket, he has been in administration most of the time, while in IPL he has been in mentor and other roles. He is even the Global Cricket Director of the Delhi Capitals franchise. In an interview to Bengali newspaper Aajkal, he has expressed his desire that he is ready to become the head coach, but Delhi Capitals is looking for some other veteran.
According to the reports, DC does not want to see Ganguly in dual role i.e. as Director of Cricket and Head Coach. He is currently the director of cricket for Delhi Capitals, DC’s sister franchise Dubai Capitals in the ILT20 and Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 league. “Ganguly already has a lot of work on his plate – as director of cricket it is his job to plan a lot of things for the franchise,” a source said.
DC wants someone with Gautam Gambhir’s temperament to come in as head coach. “The team needs a coach who is very proactive and keeps an eye on the circuit very aggressively, like Gautam Gambhir does. It is no surprise that he has been very much successful as a mentor. He keeps an eye on the players – both international and domestic,” the source said. Delhi Capitals, RCB and Punjab Kings are the only three teams that are yet to win a title.
