Despite not making it into the initial 15-member squad for the upcoming 50-overs cricket World Cup in India, there’s still a possibility for Harry Brook to contribute to England’s title defense, according to captain Jos Buttler.
Brook’s powerful batting was evident when he scored a remarkable 41-ball century in The Hundred competition. While Ben Stokes’ return led to his inclusion and Brook’s exclusion, his chances to be involved remain open.
The 24-year-old Harry Brook is positioned to join the India-bound contingent as a backup player, with the flexibility for England to modify its preliminary squad until September 28.
Speaking on Friday, Buttler commented, “There’s still a substantial amount of time before the scheduled departure, so we’ll have to wait and observe.” He added, “We’re all aware of Harry’s exceptional skills, as was evident the other night. This isn’t unexpected; we’re well aware of his outstanding abilities.”

“But due to the return of Ben Stokes and his role as a batsman, there’s a shift in the dynamics,” Buttler explained, discussing Brook’s omission from the squad.
Having played a pivotal role in England’s World Cup victories in 2019 (ODI) and 2022 (T20), Test captain Ben Stokes took everyone by surprise when he retired from ODIs in July of the previous year, citing workload concerns. However, this month, he made a U-turn and earned a spot in the upcoming home series against New Zealand.
England is elated to reintegrate Stokes into the ODI lineup, even though the exceptional all-rounder, who has been contending with a nagging knee issue, will contribute primarily as a specialist batter.
Buttler expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Welcoming Ben back is fantastic. It’s been a challenging decision due to consistent performances by players, and that’s where we stand currently.”
Now, there are reports that Harry Brook will replace the left-hander Dawid Malan in the final squad of England for ICC ODI World Cup 2023.
England is set to commence its title defense against New Zealand in Ahmedabad on October 5, marking a rematch of the 2019 final.
