In a cricketing spectacle that echoed with the beats of Tezaab’s “Ek, do, teen,” India capped off an unbeaten group stage in the ICC World Cup 2023, defeating the Netherlands by a resounding 160 runs at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. With nine consecutive victories under their belt, India’s journey in this World Cup has been nothing short of a masterclass. Centuries from KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer showcased the team’s batting prowess, setting the stage for an epic semifinal clash against New Zealand at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday.

    Historic Feat

Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, India achieved a historic milestone by securing nine wins in a single edition of the World Cup, a record-setting achievement that positions them as the team to beat in the knockout stages. The victory against the Netherlands marked the completion of half the job, with the upcoming semifinal against New Zealand eagerly awaited.

    Batting Brilliance

The Bengaluru clash witnessed a batting spectacle as India posted a formidable 410/4 on the scoreboard. Openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill set a blistering tempo, accumulating 91 runs in the first powerplay. Although Rohit, Gill, and Virat Kohli fell short of centuries, their contributions paved the way for the middle order to capitalize.

KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer’s Centuries

In a tournament where the Indian middle-order had displayed consistent performances, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer emerged as the heroes in Bengaluru. Both batsmen, who faced doubts about their World Cup participation due to injuries, not only applied themselves but also played with authority throughout the innings. Rahul’s clinical 99 against Australia and Shreyas Iyer’s impressive knocks against Sri Lanka and South Africa set the stage, but it was in Bengaluru that they etched their names in the tournament’s history with centuries.

Bowling Approach and Preparing for New Zealand

While the batting display was dazzling, the bowling unit appeared to adopt a more measured approach, perhaps conserving energy for the looming semifinal clash. The Dutch were dismissed for 250, with the Indian attack taking a more controlled approach. Notably, part-time bowlers were given a chance to contribute, with Kohli, Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rohit Sharma sharing 7.4 overs among them.

The focus now shifts to the much-anticipated semifinal against New Zealand, and the quick turnaround provides little time for respite. Captain Rohit Sharma, content with the team’s overall performance, highlighted the importance of taking it one game at a time. He praised the adaptability of the team, acknowledging the different challenges posed by diverse venues throughout the tournament.

Building Confidence and Smiles in the Dressing Room

Rohit Sharma emphasized the contributions of various individuals in different situations, praising the team’s adaptability to varied conditions. With each player stepping up and taking responsibility, India heads to the semifinals with a well-rounded squad and high spirits. The dressing room exudes positivity, buoyed by a string of clinical performances and a collective effort that has propelled them to the top.
