IND vs AUS 4th Test: Former opener Wasim Jaffer praises Ahmedabad pitch for 4th Test as Australia dominates on Day 1

Jaffer believes the pitch is ideal for batting and Australia made the most of it with Khawaja's century and Green's aggressive batting, while Chappell warns bowlers of Green's attacking shots.

Former opener Wasim Jaffer has expressed his excitement for the ongoing fourth Test between Australia and India in Ahmedabad. Jaffer believes that the pitch is ideal for batting and probably the best from a batter’s perspective.

Khawaja

According to him, the surface should favor the batters on the first two days, with no demons. He praised the Australian batters’ approach and how they occupied the crease and did not look to score quickly, making full use of the conditions.

On the first day, opening batter Usman Khawaja was the star of the show, hitting his maiden century against India. Khawaja remained unbeaten on 104 off 251 deliveries and stitched together a vital unconquered 85-run partnership for the fifth wicket alongside Cameron Green. The Indian bowlers had to work hard as there wasn’t much assistance for them from the pitch. Mohammed Shami picked up two wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin finished with one wicket each.

During the discussion, Ian Chappell highlighted the importance of not missing lengths against Green, who would make bowlers pay by playing attacking shots. Chappell also spoke about Green’s bowling abilities, stating that he can bowl quite quickly, which gives Australia the option of using him as an opening bowler.

Green showed great intent in the final session of the opening day, latching onto every shot-scoring opportunity. His partnership with Khawaja dented India’s chances of making a comeback, with Green scoring runs at a brisk pace. According to Chappell, India would have felt much better if they could have taken one more wicket, but the Green-Khawaja partnership took things away from India and really spoiled their day.

Overall, the first day of the Test was filled with excitement and action, with Australia looking to take the lead in the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With the pitch suited for batting, fans can expect more thrilling performances from both teams in the coming days.
