Sri Lanka cricket team on 4th August defeated the Indian team by 32 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. With this defeat, the Indian team’s winning streak of 11 consecutive bilateral series (2+ matches) against Sri Lanka in ODIs has come to an end. The last time India failed to win a bilateral series against Sri Lanka was in December 1997. In consecutive ODIs against Sri Lanka, India has lost the most wickets against spinners.
India suffered a crushing defeat in the second match of the three match ODI series being played between India and Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka won the match by 32 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Sri Lanka’s win came after 1108 days against India as they last defeated India in July 2021. The first ODI of the three-match ODI series was a tie and now Sri Lanka has taken a 1-0 lead by winning the second ODI. This means that India will have to win the third and final ODI to level the series.

The Sri Lankan team struggled due to the brilliant performance of the Indian spinners led by Washington Sundar, but thanks to the lower order batsmen, they managed to score 240 runs for nine wickets. On this spinner-friendly pitch, this target became like a mountain for India and the entire team was reduced to 208 runs in 42.2 overs. Wardsen took six wickets for 33 runs and captain Charith Asalanka took three wickets for 20 runs.
In the second ODI match played between India and Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan team scored 240 runs. In response, the Indian team could only score 208 runs in 42.2 overs and lost the match by 32 runs. Captain Rohit scored a half-century in 29 balls. He scored the highest 64 runs in 44 balls in the match. Apart from him, Akshar scored 44 and Gill scored 35 runs. Virat Kohli (14), Shreyas Iyer (7), KL Rahul (0), Shivam Dubey (0) all the players flopped.
The record for India losing the most wickets against spinners in an ODI match is against Sri Lanka, which was made in 2023, where India lost all its wickets against spinners. Earlier in 1997, India had lost nine wickets. This is the fifth time since 2011 that the opposition team has defended a target of less than 250 against India.
