Injury Update: Tim Southee’s Status for ENG vs NZ World Cup Opener

Tim Southee is currently recovering from a thumb injury he suffered during last month's ODI series against England.

n the 5th of October, England will face New Zealand in Ahmedabad for their opening match of the ICC World Cup 2023. Unfortunately, Kane Williamson has been ruled out due to injury for the first World Cup match. New Zealand’s fast bowler, Tim Southee, is confirmed to be part of the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. However, Southee is currently recovering from a thumb injury he suffered during last month’s ODI series against England.

Tim Southee is vital in the New Zealand team for the ICC World Cup 2023. The right-arm fast bowler also featured in the recent warm-up match against South Africa, although he didn’t get a chance to bowl in that game because of his injury.

“It’s still a bit tender” reckons Tim Southee on his thumb injury

“It’s still a bit tender where obviously there’s a bit of scarring and a bit of numbness around where the plate is. So I guess it’s just [about] getting used to that. And getting back into some bowling. Haven’t done a lot of bowling over the last couple of weeks, so it’s about getting your loads back up as well as managing the thumb,” the Kiwi pacer said.

“The Injury is Something New, Never Had That Before”

“[The injury was] something new. Haven’t done an injury like this before. I guess when something like that happens so close to a world event, your mind starts to drift towards that. With the limited time we had, I guess sitting down and working out the fastest recovery time, and the route back was to chuck some screws in it and a plate and hope for the best.

Everyone I’ve dealt with and the process has been brilliant to get me to this stage. So fingers crossed we can carry on the recovery process and be right in time,” Tim Southee further said.

New Zealand is a highly underrated team in the 50-over World Cup, with young talents like Mark Chapman, Glenn Philips, Rachin Ravindra, and others delivering outstanding performances. They are undoubtedly the team to watch out for in the ODI World Cup 2023.
