Gujarat Titans star batsman Kane Williamson has been ruled out of the entire tournament of IPL 2023 after he suffered a knee injury while taking a catch in the opening match of IPL 2023 against Chennai Super Kings. While saving a six, Williamson lost his balance and landed awkwardly, hurting his right knee in the process. The New Zealand batter limped off the field in pain and did not bat in that match.

With Kane Williamson being ruled out, many fans are demanding Steve Smith to take his place in GT’s squad for IPL 2023. But is this possible? Let’s take a look.

Steve Smith gained immense popularity for his captaincy during two Test matches and an ODI series against India. However, he became a fan favorite after his exceptional performance in the 2022-23 Big Bash League (BBL) season for the Sydney Sixers. But it is not possible for Steve Smith to replace Kane Williamson in GT’s squad at this moment as Smith is part of the IPL in another capacity, as he is a commentator for Star Sports. Even if a franchise is interested in signing him up, they can’t as Smith did not register himself for the 2023 auction.

The Titans will be eager to sign a top-order overseas batter as Williamson’s replacement in the squad. Similarly, the Mumbai Indians have yet to name an overseas replacement for Jhye Richardson.
