Mark Wood, the English fast bowler for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), is expected to be in contention for the Purple Cap in IPL 2023, according to former Indian cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra. Chopra believes that if Wood remains fit and plays, he will set the stage on fire and remain in the running for the Purple Cap, which is awarded to the top wicket-taker in the tournament. Wood has already made an impact in the opening game of the season, taking five wickets for just 14 runs and leading his team to a 50-run victory over Delhi Capitals.
Chopra praised Wood’s bowling skills, stating that he was “absolutely unplayable” against Delhi, and could emerge as the best fast bowler of the tournament. However, Chopra also believes that LSG may have a selection dilemma with the absence of South African players, including star keeper-batsman Quinton de Kock, who will miss a couple of matches due to the ongoing 2-ODI series against The Netherlands.

West Indian Kyle Mayers replaced de Kock in the opening game and played an outstanding innings, scoring 73 off 38 balls and helping LSG secure a dominant victory. Chopra said that Mayers’ performance may cause Mayers sit out. Despite the possible selection issues, LSG will look to build on their impressive performance from last season, where they made it to the playoffs, and start this season with a win.

In summary, Chopra’s prediction of Wood competing for the Purple Cap has added a new dimension to the IPL 2023 season. Meanwhile, LSG’s selection dilemma, which arises due to the absence of their South African players, may present challenges in maintaining the team’s winning momentum.
