Amit Mishra, the 40-year-old senior statesman of the IPL, is back in action with his new team, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and he’s not ready to hang up his boots just yet. Having played in the tournament since its inception in 2008, Mishra is the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the league’s history, with 168 wickets under his belt.
After going unsold and not playing in 2022, Mishra made a triumphant return to the IPL in 2023 when his new team, LSG, took on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 7. The spin-friendly pitch allowed LSG to play two leg spinners, Amit Mishra and Ravi Bishnoi, a move that paid off as Mishra took two wickets in his last over, taking his total wicket count to 168.

Mishra’s performance in the IPL has been consistent, and he has no plans to retire anytime soon. In a post-match discussion with Player of the Match Krunal Pandya, Mishra revealed, “As long as I have that fire within me to take wickets, I’m gonna continue playing cricket.”
Mishra’s experience and leadership will be vital for LSG, especially as they take on the formidable Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their next match on April 10. Mishra will be hoping to overtake Lasith Malinga and become the third-highest wicket-taker in IPL history, as he is only two wickets behind the Sri Lankan legend.

Despite the vast age and experience gap between Mishra and Bishnoi, the two leg spinners have formed a great bond. Mishra has been mentoring the young Bishnoi, who is curious to learn and always approaches Mishra for advice. As Mishra said, “We are two different bowlers, but we share a very good bond.”
With Mishra’s skill and experience, LSG is poised for a successful season. As long as he has that fire within him, Mishra will continue to entertain cricket fans with his impressive performances in the IPL.
