As the 16th edition of the IPL approaches its thrilling conclusion, all the franchises are gearing up for their final group stage matches. In an upcoming clash between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the iconic Eden Gardens on May 20, LSG has announced a remarkable tribute to the city of Kolkata by donning a special jersey in Mohun Bagan’s iconic green and maroon colors.
Taking to Twitter, LSG revealed their decision to pay homage to one of Kolkata’s most revered sports institutions, Mohun Bagan. The vibrant green and maroon jersey, synonymous with Mohun Bagan’s rich history and passionate fanbase, will replace LSG’s customary colors for this significant encounter. The team even shared captivating photoshoot images featuring the players in the distinctive attire.
Mohun Bagan holds a storied legacy in Kolkata, boasting an intense rivalry with East Bengal, making their matches highly anticipated and widely watched across India’s footballing landscape. In a fascinating twist, LSG’s owners, the Goenka Group, acquired a majority stake in Mohun Bagan in 2020, leading to the club’s upcoming rebranding as Mohun Bagan Super Giants from June 1.
Expressing his sentiments behind this heartfelt gesture, Shashwat Goenka, owner of LSG and Mohun Bagan, stated, “Mohun Bagan is not merely a club; it is an emotion. Its legacy embodies the spirit of Kolkata.” He further emphasized, “We decided that LSG would proudly sport the iconic colors of this esteemed club as a mark of respect to Mohun Bagan’s legacy and the city it represents. I hope that not only the club’s supporters but also the people of Kolkata will rally behind us in our match against KKR.”
Currently occupying the third position on the IPL points table with 15 points from 13 games, Lucknow Super Giants are on the cusp of securing a playoff spot. However, the victory of Royal Challengers Bangalore against Sunrisers Hyderabad in yesterday’s match has doubted LSG’s chances to the playoffs, setting the stage for an even more exciting journey in the tournament.
