The IPL 2025 season is set to resume with Match 58 between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The tournament had taken a break for over a week due to rising tensions between India and Pakistan. The highly anticipated clash will be held at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. However, the weather could spoil the excitement, as there’s an 84% chance of rain on May 17. So what happens if the match is washed out? Let’s take a look.
Will Kolkata Knight Riders Be Knocked Out of Playoff Race?
Led by Ajinkya Rahane, KKR currently sits at 6th place with 11 points from 12 matches. One of their earlier games against Punjab Kings was washed out due to rain. With two games remaining, Kolkata can still reach a maximum of 15 points. But if rain washes out their match against RCB, they will only get one point, meaning they can then reach a maximum of just 14 points even if they win their final game.
In that scenario, KKR could be eliminated as teams like Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings, and Mumbai Indians already have 14 or more points, and also have a better Net Run Rate than KKR. So, rain could end Kolkata’s playoff hopes.

Can Royal Challengers Bangalore Secure a Playoff Spot?
RCB, led by Rajat Patidar, currently stands second on the IPL 2025 points table with 16 points from 11 games. If their match against KKR gets washed out, they will move to 17 points in 12 games and temporarily take the top spot without playing.
However, even with 17 points, playoff qualification is not guaranteed. That’s because four other teams — Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Delhi Capitals — can also reach or surpass the 17-point mark. Hence, RCB’s fate might still depend on the results of other matches.
