In a strategic move to fortify the Mumbai Indians’ pace department, Nita Ambani, the owner of the franchise, made waves in the IPL Auction 2024 by securing two overseas pacers – Gerald Coetzee and Dilshan Madhushanka. The acquisitions, totaling a significant investment, are poised to enhance the team’s bowling prowess and add depth to their roster for the upcoming IPL season.
South African right-arm pacer Gerald Coetzee’s IPL dream materialized on December 19 as Mumbai Indians clinched him in the ongoing auction. Coetzee, with a base price of INR 2 crores, garnered attention from Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, both expressing immediate interest in the budding fast bowler. A bidding war ensued with Lucknow Super Giants joining at INR 3.60 crores. Eventually, Mumbai Indians secured Coetzee’s services for a substantial INR 5 crores.
Coetzee’s impressive performance in the World Cup bolstered his IPL prospects. Stepping up when seasoned bowlers like Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala faced injuries, Coetzee emerged as South Africa’s highest wicket-taker in the tournament, amassing 20 wickets in just 8 games. The 2023 Cricket World Cup showcased his mettle, earning him recognition as one of the breakout stars.

Sri Lankan left-arm pacer Dilshan Madhushanka added another feather to his cap as Mumbai Indians secured him with a winning bid of INR 4.60 crores. With a base price of INR 50 lakh, Madhushanka became a sought-after prospect, drawing interest from both Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians. The latter, a five-time IPL champion, emerged victorious in the bidding war.
Madhushanka’s remarkable journey to the IPL spotlight began with a stellar performance in the 2022 Asia Cup, where he played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s title-winning campaign. His ability to dismiss the likes of Virat Kohli showcased his talent on the big stage. The left-arm pacer continued his fine form in the World Cup, finishing as the third-highest wicket-taker with 21 scalps in 9 games, including a notable five-wicket haul against India.
The acquisitions of Coetzee and Madhushanka underline Nita Ambani’s commitment to building a well-rounded Mumbai Indians squad. Recognizing the value of quality pacers in the IPL, these signings contribute to the team’s strategy of maintaining a formidable bowling attack. With a blend of experience and emerging talent, the Mumbai Indians aim to make a strong impact in the upcoming season.
