IPL: Number of Matches Likely to Increase from 2028, New Teams Could Join Too? Arun Dhumal Reveals

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may increase the number of matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL) starting from 2028. Reports suggest that BCCI is considering expanding the tournament to a total of 94 matches from the 2028 season. However, for now, there are no plans to add more teams to the league.

In 2022, the number of matches in the IPL was increased to 74, and two new franchises were introduced.

    Two Teams Added in 2022

The Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants became part of the IPL in the 2022 season. Initially, there was a proposal to increase the number of matches to 84 from the 2025 season. However, due to challenges related to the tournament window and broadcasters’ concerns, the plan was put on hold. IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal has now revealed that the BCCI is seriously considering raising the number of matches to 94 from the 2028 season.

Each Team Could Play Home and Away Format

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Dhumal said, “This could certainly be an opportunity. We are in discussions with the ICC and are also having in-house discussions at BCCI. Considering the changing interest of fans in bilateral series, ICC events, franchise cricket, and T20 leagues, we need to talk about this more seriously. We want a bigger window. Our idea is to move from 74 to 84 or even 94 matches, allowing each team to play every other team both home and away, which requires 94 matches.”

Dhumal further explained, “There was already a lot of cricket being played. We returned from a Test series in Australia, played the Champions Trophy, and then had the IPL. So it was decided that moving from 74 to 84 matches in 2025 would not be wise. However, whenever the time feels right, we will make a decision regarding increasing the number of matches.”

Dhumal Calls IPL 2025 a Successful Season

Dhumal described the IPL 2025 season as a successful one. He praised the competitive spirit among teams and the emergence of several young Indian players.

He also mentioned that it would be exciting if a team that has never won the IPL title before were to become champions this season. Teams like Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Super Giants — none of whom have won the IPL trophy yet — are currently in the race for the playoffs.
