Jasprit Bumrah encountered a concerning moment in the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 clash between India and Sri Lanka. After previously battling a back injury in September 2022, which led to his absence from the T20 World Cup and the Indian Premier League, Bumrah returned during the T20I series against Ireland. His return was eagerly anticipated for the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2023. However, during the match against Sri Lanka, he appeared to twist his ankle while bowling, landing awkwardly during the delivery. Fortunately, he managed to continue bowling and even dismissed Pathum Nissanka in his next over.
In the same match, Sri Lankan bowlers Dunith Wellalage and part-time bowler Charith Asalanka posed a significant challenge to the Indian batsmen on a turning track, restricting India to a modest 213 runs in the Asia Cup Super 4 match. The left-arm spinner Wellalage (5/40) and off-spinner Asalanka (4/18) dismantled India’s star-studded lineup after India chose to bat first.

However, India began their innings on a fiery note, with Rohit Sharma scoring 53 runs off 48 balls and forming an 80-run opening partnership with Shubman Gill (19). This opening stand proved to be the highlight of India’s innings. The sight of Rohit and Gill accumulating runs at a brisk pace in just 12 overs brought back memories of India’s dominant performance against Pakistan the previous day, when they posted a massive total of 356 for the loss of only two wickets.
During his innings, Rohit Sharma achieved a significant personal milestone by becoming the sixth Indian batsman to score 10,000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs).
