Jasprit Bumrah, born on 6 December 1993, is an Indian cricketer representing the national team across all formats. Known for his distinctive right-arm fast bowling action, Bumrah is widely regarded as one of the premier bowlers globally and among the finest fast bowlers ever produced by India. He represents Gujarat in domestic cricket and the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. Since December 2023, he has served as the vice-captain of the Indian Test team.

Jasprit Bumrah Test Career

In November 2017, Jasprit Bumrah earned his spot in India’s Test squad for the series against South Africa. His Test debut came on January 5, 2018, at Newlands in Cape Town. During the 3rd Test match of India’s Tour of South Africa 2017-18 in Johannesburg, Bumrah secured his first five-wicket haul in Tests, claiming figures of 5/54 from 18.5 overs.

During the Boxing Day Test of India’s Tour of Australia 2018, Bumrah achieved a career-best performance with figures of 6/33. This remarkable feat made him the first Asian bowler to register five-wicket hauls in Australia, England, and South Africa in a single calendar year. He concluded the series as the joint highest wicket-taker with 21 dismissals, alongside Australian bowler Nathan Lyon. Bumrah’s 48 wickets in his debut year in Test cricket set a record for an Indian bowler.

In August 2019, Bumrah secured his fourth Test five-wicket haul against West Indies in the first Test match of India’s tour of West Indies 2019, with figures of 5/7 in the 2nd innings. During the second Test match, he became the third Indian to claim a hat-trick in a Test match.

After playing 17 Tests overseas, Bumrah made his maiden Test appearance in India at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium against England in February 2021. In March 2022, he achieved his first Test five-wicket haul in India during the second day-night Test against Sri Lanka.

On July 1, 2022, Bumrah assumed the captaincy of the Indian Test team against England for the first time, replacing Rohit Sharma, who was sidelined due to COVID-19. The following day, Bumrah made headlines by hitting 29 runs in an over bowled by Stuart Broad, surpassing the 18-year-old Test record set by Brian Lara. The over also included six extras, resulting in a total of 35 runs.

Jasprit Bumrah Personal Life

Jasprit Bumrah was born into a Sikh Punjabi family settled in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Sadly, Bumrah lost his father, Jasbir Singh, when he was just 5 years old. Raised by his mother Daljit Bumrah, who worked as a school teacher in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, he grew up in a middle-class environment. Daljit gained attention in the cricketing world after her emotional appearance in the 2019 Netflix documentary Cricket Fever: Mumbai Indians, celebrating her son’s success.

On 15 March 2021, Bumrah tied the knot with model and presenter Sanjana Ganesan in Goa. Ganesan, hailing from Pune, Maharashtra, is a former Miss India finalist and a participant in MTV’s Splitsvilla in 2014. The couple welcomed their son on 4 September 2023.

Jasprit Bumrah commenced his first-class cricket journey representing Gujarat, marking his debut against Vidarbha in October 2013 during the 2013–14 season.

Emerging as a right-arm fast bowler with a distinctive bowling action, Bumrah entered the T20 arena against Maharashtra in the 2012–13 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. His standout performance, including figures of 3/14, propelled Gujarat to victory over Punjab in the final, earning him the Man of the Match title.

Bumrah’s talent shone brightly during his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut, where he delivered impressive figures of 3/32 against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Despite featuring in only two matches during the Pepsi IPL 2013 season for Mumbai Indians, he was retained for the subsequent Pepsi IPL 2014 season.

Adding to his cricketing achievements, on 11 December 2020, Bumrah showcased his batting prowess by scoring his maiden first-class half-century (55*) against Australia A during the India tour of Australia.
