Kusal Perera Career
During the first Test in Durban in 2019, Kusal Perera played a remarkable innings, scoring an unbeaten 153 against South Africa. He secured an astounding victory for Sri Lanka by adding 78 crucial runs for the last wicket partnership with Vishwa Fernando in the fourth innings of the match. This exceptional performance earned him recognition, with Wisden naming it the second-best Test innings of the decade in 2019. Additionally, he was honored with the best test performance award by Cricinfo for the year 2019.
In May 2021, Kusal Perera was appointed as the captain of the Sri Lankan cricket team for their One Day International (ODI) series against Bangladesh.

Kusal Perera received his education at Kottawa Dharmapala Maha Vidyalaya and later at Royal College Colombo. Notably, he represented Royal College Colombo in the prestigious Royal–Thomian annual cricket encounter. While he initially began as a right-handed batsman during his early years, he made a significant switch to become a left-handed batsman. This transformation was inspired by the batting stance of the legendary Sri Lankan cricketer, Sanath Jayasuriya, whom Kusal Perera looked up to as his childhood idol and hero.
Kusal Perera made his debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when he played for the Rajasthan Royals during the 2013 IPL season.
Before the commencement of the 2018 IPL season, Sunrisers Hyderabad approached him to replace their former captain, David Warner, who had been banned due to a ball-tampering scandal against South Africa. However, Kusal Perera declined the offer, prioritizing participation in domestic league matches in Sri Lanka and aiming for a Test return to the Sri Lankan cricket team for the upcoming series against West Indies in June 2018. Consequently, Alex Hales was brought in as a replacement for Warner in the 2018 IPL season.
Kusal Perera is recognized for his ability to score quickly and hit the ball with power, showcasing a batting style reminiscent of the former Sri Lankan legend, Sanath Jayasuriya. Notably, he set a domestic record by scoring 330 runs off 270 balls in a first-class match.
In March 2018, he was appointed as the vice-captain of Dambulla’s squad for the 2017–18 Super Four Provincial Tournament. Following this, in the subsequent month, he was named as the captain of Dambulla’s squad for the 2018 Super Provincial One Day Tournament.
In August 2018, Kusal Perera was designated as the vice-captain of Kandy’s squad for the 2018 SLC T20 League. In November 2019, he joined the Cumilla Warriors in the 2019–20 Bangladesh Premier League, and in October 2020, he was drafted by the Kandy Tuskers for the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League.
