Theekshana’s upbringing was under the care of his grandmother, and he originally hails from Siddhartha Vidyalaya in Sedawatta. However, his journey in school cricket took an interesting turn when two former students of St. Benedict’s College in Colombo approached Theekshana’s guardian with a request to relocate to Kotahena. This move aimed to enable Theekshana to represent St. Benedict’s College in school cricket.

The Cricket Wing of St. Benedict’s College played a crucial role by offering financial support during his initial two years. Eventually, St. Benedict’s College extended a scholarship to Theekshana. His talent and dedication shone through as he went on to win the All Island Best All Rounder Award in his final year at St. Benedict’s College, a testament to his remarkable journey in school cricket.

Morawakage Maheesh Theekshana’s cricketing journey has been filled with remarkable achievements. He made his ODI debut for Sri Lanka against South Africa on September 7, 2021, and left an immediate impact by taking a wicket with his very first ball in ODI cricket. He went on to claim 4 wickets for just 37 runs in that match, contributing significantly to Sri Lanka’s series victory with a 2-1 score.

Theekshana’s entry into international cricket marked a significant milestone as he became the first Sri Lankan cricketer born in the 21st century. His rapid rise continued when he made his T20I debut on September 10, 2021, against South Africa. In that same month, he was named in Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, where he emerged as the second-highest wicket-taker for Sri Lanka with eight wickets.

By June 2022, he achieved his career-best eighth ranking in the ICC Men’s T20I Player Rankings for bowlers, reflecting his exceptional talent in the shortest format of the game. In July 2022, he was added to Sri Lanka’s Test squad for the second match against Australia and made his Test debut on July 8, 2022, against Australia.

Theekshana emerged as a consistent wicket-taking option for skipper Dasun Shanaka, ending the tournament with 6 wickets for 162 runs and an economy rate of 6.75.
