Marcus was allowed to practice with the first-class team but did not receive an immediate contract. As they discussed their options, Marcus expressed his preference for either Sydney or Melbourne. Ultimately, Marcus chose Melbourne to compete for Victoria, a decision that proved to be transformative for his career.
Chris Stoinis battled non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer affecting the lymphatic system, for an extended period. When his health deteriorated, Marcus moved back to Perth to be closer to his family. Tragically, Chris Stoinis passed away at the age of 60 on November 14, 2017, in Osborne Park, Western Australia. This loss prompted Marcus to withdraw from Western Australia’s JLT Sheffield Shield game, occurring just days before the Australian team for the opening two Tests of the Magellan Ashes was named.
Marcus expressed gratitude to Cricket Victoria for releasing him from the final two years of his state contract without any issues. He also acknowledged the WACA for facilitating his return home, allowing him to spend precious time with his father during his final days.
While Chris Stoinis was not a cricketer himself, he played an integral role in ensuring his son’s success in cricket.
