Mark Sinclair Chapman was born in Hong Kong to a Hong Kongese mother and a New Zealander father. His father, Peter, served as a crown prosecutor for the Government of Hong Kong, while his mother, Anne, worked in the financial sector. Mark’s educational journey took him from Island School in Hong Kong to King’s College, Auckland, where he enrolled at the age of 14. He later pursued engineering studies at the University of Auckland.

Mark’s cricketing journey began early, as he represented the Hong Kong under-19 team at the age of 15 during the 2010 Under-19 World Cup. He made his World Cricket League debut for Hong Kong in the 2011 Division Three tournament when he was just 16 years old. In that tournament, he played a pivotal role, top-scoring with an unbeaten 70 in the final, helping Hong Kong secure the championship and promotion to the 2011 World Cricket League Division Two.

During his time with Hong Kong, Chapman made his List A debut in the latter tournament, scoring 192 runs at an impressive average of 38.40 in six matches, including two half-centuries. He also made his T20 debut in the 2013 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier against Italy.

Mark Chapman’s transition to New Zealand cricket occurred when he made his first-class debut in the 2015–16 Plunket Shield. Due to his dual citizenship with both New Zealand and Hong Kong, he did not count as an overseas player.

On January 1, 2018, Chapman achieved a milestone by scoring his first century in a Twenty20 match while playing for Auckland against Canterbury in the 2017–18 Super Smash.

He continued to impress in domestic cricket, being the leading run-scorer in the 2017–18 Ford Trophy, amassing 480 runs in eight matches for Auckland. His stellar performances earned him a contract with Auckland for the 2018–19 season.

In March 2020, during round five of the 2019–20 Plunket Shield season, Mark Chapman and Joe Carter achieved a remarkable feat by scoring centuries in both innings of the same match. This was the first time two batsmen accomplished such a feat in the Plunket Shield.

In June 2020, Mark Chapman was offered a contract by Auckland for the 2020–21 domestic cricket season. However, during a match between Auckland and Otago in the 2020–21 Plunket Shield season, he became a notable figure in cricket history as he was replaced by Ben Lister due to feeling unwell, in accordance with updated International Cricket Council (ICC) playing conditions for COVID-19 substitutions.
