South Africa faces a significant setback ahead of the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup as Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala have been ruled out due to failed fitness tests. Nortje, known for his pace, has valuable experience in Indian conditions and is a notable absence from the squad.
In their place, Andile Phehlukwayo and Lizaad Williams have been called up as replacements. Phehlukwayo showcased his skills in both bowling and batting during the series against Australia.
Although the pace attack remains strong with Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, and Gerald Coetzee, experienced left-arm quick Wayne Parnell is also dealing with injuries.
Head coach Rob Walter expressed disappointment for Nortje and Magala’s omission and emphasized their value to the team. He sees this as an opportunity for Phehlukwayo and Williams to shine on the global stage.
The South African squad is set to depart for India soon, with their first World Cup match against Sri Lanka scheduled for 7 October.
