MCC Announces 10 New Cricketing Laws

The custodian of The Laws of Cricket, Marylebone Cricket Club, has announced 10 New Cricketing Laws in its third revision following the first and second revisions of 2017 and 2019.

Unlike the previous revision, which only brought about a few amends and changes, the alternations in cricketing laws this time around is a lot more significant.

The new cricketing laws will come into effect on 1st October 2022; until then, the MCC expects the umpires and cricketers to learn to implement the new rules.

Here are the 10 New Cricketing Laws:

Law 1 – Replacement players

The introduction of new clause 1.3 states that the player chosen as the replacement will inherit all the sanctions and dismissals the original player has effected in the match.

Law 18- Batters returning when caught

The new law 18.11 declares that the new batter entering in the middle will start his innings at the end the dismissed batter was batting from. Batter crossing the halfway pitch mark while the catch is taken will not change the end with dismissed batter.

Law 20.4.2.12- Dead ball

The umpires hold the absolute power in their hands to signal a dead ball when an outside interruption in any form alters the outcome of the delivery in question.

Law 21.4- Bowlers throwing towards striker’s end before delivery

Until now, a rare occurrence in modern-day cricket, which was termed as No ball, will be signalled as dead ball from 1st October. If a bowler throws the ball to run out the striker before the batter gets in his stance, the umpires are bound to signal it as a dead ball.

Law 22.1- Judging a wide

To even out the playing field between batters and bowlers, a wide will now apply to where the batter is standing, where the striker has stood at any point since the bowler began their run-up, and which would also have passed wide of the striker in a normal batting position.

Law 25.8- Striker’s right to play the ball

A striker is free to play any ball if some part of one’s bat or body stays in touch with the pitch. Also, any ball forcing the batters to leave the pitch will now be signalled as No ball.

Laws 27.4 & 28.6- Unfair movements by the fielding side

This law states that if the fielding side moves unfairly, the umpires will award 5 penalty runs to the batting side and call it a dead ball.

Law 38.3- Running out the moving non-striker

This law has been moved from law 41 (unfair play) to law 38 (run out). Mankad will be legally termed as run out from the 1st of October.

Law 41.3- Ban on saliva

Law 41.3 completely bans the usage of saliva from shining the ball. MCC has found in its study that saliva has little or no effect on the amount of swing bowlers generate.
