New Zealand, two-time runners-up in previous editions, faced a major setback leading up to the ODI World Cup as their skipper Kane Williamson sustained an injury during his debut match for the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023. In an attempt to prevent a boundary, Williamson leaped over the ropes, unfortunately injuring his anterior cruciate ligament. Subsequently, he withdrew from the tournament and underwent surgery. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation and is expected to assume the captaincy for New Zealand in the ODI World Cup, scheduled to take place in India from October 5 to November 19.
Having recently lost the ODI series to Pakistan by a 4-1 margin, New Zealand faced challenges as several senior players were absent due to their IPL commitments. In Williamson’s absence, Tom Latham led the team, but with the impending return of Kane Williamson, Latham’s prospects of continuing his leadership role in the World Cup 2023 looks uncertain.
The upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023 will be hosted by India, and the New Zealand Cricket Board has finalized a 15-member squad for the prestigious tournament. Gary Stead has been entrusted with the coaching responsibilities for the New Zealand team during the ODI World Cup. Kane Williamson, an experienced campaigner, is set to lead the New Zealand cricket team’s charge in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.
The New Zealand squad boasts a formidable lineup, with Kane Williamson as the captain and Tom Latham as the vice-captain. With a focus on securing the ODI World Cup title this time, the New Zealand cricket team is geared up for the challenge. Kane Williamson’s extensive international experience and leadership prowess have been instrumental in the team’s past successes, including their journey to the final of the ODI World Cup in 2019.
