The 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to take place in 2025, but before that, a mega player auction will be held. The IPL Governing Council has announced the player retention policy, introducing some new rules, including one concerning foreign players that franchises have been requesting for some time. In recent years, several foreign players participated in the auction but withdrew from playing just before the season began, causing significant losses for franchises. Complaints were raised with the IPL Governing Council regarding this issue, leading to the implementation of a new rule.
Foreign Players Must Participate in Mega Auction
According to the IPL Governing Council, any foreign player who does not register for the mega player auction will be banned from participating in the following year’s auction. This means that it is now mandatory for all foreign players to take part in the IPL mega auction.

Two-Year Ban for Refusing to Play
This new rule is expected to please franchises and fans alike. In recent seasons, some players would decline to play at the last minute, citing workload as an excuse. Under the new rule, if a player is selected by a franchise during the auction but later refuses to play before the season starts, that player will be banned from participating in the IPL for two years. Additionally, they will not be able to register for the player auction during that period.
