Oliver John Douglas Pope, born on January 2, 1998, is a distinguished English cricketer associated with both the England national cricket team and Surrey County Cricket Club. Primarily a right-handed batsman, Pope occasionally takes on the role of a wicket-keeper. Pope made his Test debut against India in 2018.

Pope’s cricket journey includes his education at Cranleigh School, where he is the great-great-great-great-grandson of the school’s inaugural headmaster, Joseph Merriman. He actively participated in club cricket for Guildford and Cranleigh Cricket Clubs and was part of various Surrey age-group squads.

Signing a two-year professional contract with Surrey on August 26, 2016, Pope made his List A debut just two days later in the semi-final of the 2016 Royal London One-Day Cup against Yorkshire. His first-class debut for Surrey occurred on March 28, 2017, against Oxford MCCU. Pope showcased his talent by achieving his maiden List A half-century on May 7, 2017, against Sussex and made his Twenty20 debut in the 2017 NatWest t20 Blast on July 7, 2017.

Pope’s breakthrough came in 2018 when he hit four centuries and averaged 70.42 during Surrey’s County Championship-winning campaign, earning him the PCA Young Player of the Year award. His success continued in 2019, finishing as the highest-scoring Surrey batter in the first-class season with 812 runs at an average of 101.

Returning to the Surrey side for the 2021 County Championship after the disrupted 2020 season, Pope delivered impressive performances, scoring 861 runs at an average of 78.27, including a career-best 274 against Glamorgan.

In April 2022, Pope joined the Welsh Fire for the 2022 season of The Hundred.

Pope’s international career began when he was added to England’s squad for the second Test against India at Lord’s in August 2018, where he made his Test debut. His consistent performances earned him a place in England’s squads for various series, and he played in all six Test matches of the 2020 England summer.
