Hailing from Pretoria in the Transvaal Province of South Africa, Rassie van der Dussen, a dedicated South African professional cricketer, owes much of his success to the unwavering support of his parents. Born on February 7, 1989, he currently stands at 34 years of age in the year 2023, bearing the name of one of his beloved grandfathers.
Rassie van der Dussen Family- Father, Mother, Siblings
The cricketer, Rassie van der Dussen, comes from a family deeply rooted in rugby, with his father, Nico Snr, and maternal grandfather both having been amateur rugby players, although never professionally. Despite their rugby background, Rassie’s father always encouraged his children to explore diverse interests and develop independent thinking.
Interestingly, Rassie has kept his mother’s name a private matter and hasn’t shared any photos of his parents on his social media, suggesting a preference for privacy on their part.
Growing up in Pretoria alongside his four siblings, the Van der Dussen brothers found their sports haven on an old, worn-out tennis court outside their home. Despite its unsuitability for tennis, they discovered a small patch of grass amidst the cracked concrete and scattered potholes, ideal for a game of cricket. In their makeshift games, they used the stumps of a large tree as wickets and bamboo sticks, known as “bamboes-krieket,” in lieu of cricket bats.
One of Rassie’s brothers attests to the competitive spirit among the Van der Dussen brothers, stating, “Whenever you have Van der Dussen brothers together, some form of sport is inevitable. It’s a fierce, yet healthy, competition among us.”
While all the Van der Dussen brothers shared a love for cricket in their upbringing, it was Rassie who decided to pursue it as a career, while the others remained content playing club cricket.
Rassie van der Dussen is married to Lara van der Dussen. The couple exchanged vows in 2018 after 6 years of dating.
