Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has weighed in on the intriguing selection battle between young talents Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer for a spot in India’s playing XI during the highly anticipated ICC World Cup 2023. Uthappa emphasized that other batting positions appear to be locked in for the marquee tournament.
As the countdown to the World Cup intensifies, India’s opening combination seems well-established with skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill slated to open the innings. The ever-consistent Virat Kohli is set to occupy the No. 3 spot in the batting order. KL Rahul is expected to don the wicketkeeper’s gloves and occupy the crucial No. 5 position. This leaves just one spot in the batting lineup up for grabs, making it a two-way contest between Kishan and Iyer.
The Positions Of The Remaining Batters Seem Set – Robin Uthappa: Robin Uthappa believes that the remaining batting positions in India’s lineup are relatively settled, with only one slot creating competition between Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer. Uthappa emphasized that the player who performs exceptionally well, particularly in the upcoming third ODI, is likely to secure a coveted spot in the World Cup playing XI.
“There will be competition between Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer. The batter who will score more runs in the third ODI will start in the World Cup. The positions of the remaining batters seem set,” remarked Robin Uthappa.
Shreyas Iyer, who has previously showcased his mettle at the No. 4 position with outstanding performances, had cemented his place in the lineup before an injury temporarily sidelined him. However, he made a triumphant return during the Asia Cup 2023 and solidified his presence with a scintillating century in the second ODI against Australia.

Uthappa Praises Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli: Robin Uthappa expressed admiration for Rohit Sharma’s astute approach in ODIs. He commended Rohit’s adaptability to varying match situations. Additionally, Uthappa conveyed his optimism regarding a stellar performance from Virat Kohli in the lead-up to the World Cup.
“I love the fact that Rohit Sharma is playing according to his tried-and-tested ODI template. He is taking some time initially and then plays positively according to the situation. He is playing exceptionally well.”
“The master is doing what he does well. It’s good to see that he (Virat Kohli) has gotten a break. He is fresh and is coming to play the last ODI against Australia and will then go straight into the World Cup, and we can hope very good things from him moving forward.”
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have made a significant return to the team after being rested for the initial two matches of the series. Notably, Ishan Kishan missed out on a spot in the playing XI for the final ODI in Rajkot on Wednesday, September 27, due to illness. This absence leaves both Kishan and Iyer with the opportunity to make their mark in the upcoming contest and stake their claim for a coveted spot in India’s World Cup squad.
