Shubman Gill Early Life & Domestic Career
Shubman Gill, born on 8 September 1999 into a Punjabi Sikh family in Fazilka, Punjab, displayed an early aptitude for cricket. His father, Lakhwinder Singh, an agriculturist with cricketing aspirations, relocated the family to Mohali, near the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, to facilitate Gill’s higher-level training.
Gill’s cricketing prowess was evident from a young age. At just 14, he made a remarkable debut in the Under-16 category for Punjab in the Vijay Merchant Trophy, scoring a double-century. In 2014, he amassed 351 runs in Punjab’s Inter-District Under-16 competition, including a record-breaking opening partnership of 587 runs with Nirmal Singh.
He made his List A debut for Punjab in the 2016–17 Vijay Hazare Trophy and his first-class debut in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy. In his second first-class match, he notched up his maiden century against Services. Gill’s consistent performances earned him a spot in India C’s squad for the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy, where he played a pivotal role in guiding his team to the final with an unbeaten century against India A.
His exceptional talent continued to shine as he scored his maiden double century in first-class cricket against Tamil Nadu in December 2018. Gill further impressed with a brilliant innings of 148 runs against Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy, nearly securing victory single-handedly.
By January 2019, Gill had amassed 990 runs in first-class cricket, eventually crossing the 1000-run milestone in his fifteenth innings. He emerged as the leading run-scorer for Punjab in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy, tallying 728 runs in five matches.
Gill’s leadership qualities were recognized when he was appointed captain of the India Blue team for the 2019–20 Duleep Trophy and later led the India C team in the 2019–20 Deodhar Trophy, becoming the youngest cricketer to captain a side in the tournament.
In September 2022, Gill signed with Glamorgan as their overseas player for the remainder of the 2022 County Championship season, debuting against Worcestershire at Sophia Gardens.
