Tensions are evident within the so-called ‘One Family’ of the Indian Premier League (IPL), particularly concerning the Mumbai Indians. The shift in captaincy from Rohit Sharma to Hardik Pandya for the upcoming IPL 2024 has led to a notable setback. Media reports indicate that the team has witnessed a drop of nearly 1 million followers across various social media platforms since the announcement. The decision has stirred discontent among Rohit Sharma’s fan base, with some expressing their displeasure by burning Mumbai Indians’ team jerseys.
Beyond the external protests, the Mumbai Indians face potential internal challenges with the reactions of two key players, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah. Following Hardik Pandya’s move from Gujarat Titans to Mumbai, Bumrah shared a cryptic post, stating, “Silence is sometimes the best answer.” Subsequently, after the captaincy change announcement, Suryakumar Yadav expressed his sentiments by sharing an image of a broken heart on his Instagram story.

While Bumrah had anticipated a chance to captain the side, Suryakumar Yadav had also been patiently waiting for such an opportunity. A prolific T20 batter at 33, Surya has showcased his leadership skills by captaining the Indian side recently. Bumrah, with leadership roles in Test and T20Is for India, was perceived as a team leader. The appointment of Pandya has shifted the team dynamics in Mumbai.
The situation draws parallels to 2013 when Ricky Ponting was replaced as Mumbai skipper, and a young Rohit Sharma took over. Although not young, the 30-year-old Hardik Pandya has more years ahead to lead the Mumbai side, especially considering Surya’s age of 33, potentially leading the team for the next five years.
Suryakumar Yadav could leave Mumbai Indians before IPL 2025 to find a new home in IPL where he could handle the reigns.
