“He was neither under consideration by me nor by Babar Azam…” Afridi on PCB’s logic of naming Shan as vice captain

Babar Azam was heavily criticized for his captaincy after Pakistan lost a home Test series against England, failed to win one against New Zealand and then lost an ODI contest against the Black Caps.

Many experts advised to remove him from captaincy and suggested different names who could fit that role. However, few recent reports claim that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering Shan Masood as a strong candidate, after he was named as a vice-captain for the ODI series against New Zealand. This has not been received well by former Interim Chief Selector, Shahid Afridi, who ridiculed the call from PCB, questioning the logic behind picking Masood for the role.

“Shan Masood should not have been named as vice-captain of the ODI squad. Chairman of the PCB should have taken captain or chief selector under confidence; he was neither under consideration by me nor by Babar Azam for the first two ODI’s against New Zealand,” Afridi said.

“Shan Masood cannot be named as captain or vice-captain of the Pakistan Cricket Team based on his performances for Derbyshire,” he added.

Shahid Afridi also gave his verdict on the ongoing criticism on Babar and also on split captaincy in Pakistan cricket team.

He said: “I believe that Babar Azam has a lot of room for improvement in his captaincy. I am not in favour of having three different captains for the different game formats, and instead suggest naming one captain for ODI and Test cricket and a separate captain for T20s.”

“If Babar Azam is selfish, we need two to three additional selfish players in the team” – Saeed Ajmal

Babar Azam faced criticism for his relatively slow strike rate of 69.29 while chasing a 262 run target in Pakistan vs New Zealand’s second ODI. Saeed Ajmal, however, defended him, stating that any negative aspects of his game can be rectified. He also said that Pakistan does not need separate captains for different formats, and if they choose to, they should only opt for separate captains in white and red-ball cricket.

Former Pakistan cricket player Saeed Ajmal has defended Pakistan’s national team captain Babar Azam against recent criticism, stating that calling him “selfish” is baseless. Ajmal believes that if Azam is considered selfish, Pakistan’s national team needs more players like him.

Babar has been one of Pakistan’s most prolific players in recent years, across all formats. In 2022, he was their highest run-getter in ODIs and Tests, and the second-highest in T20Is. In nine Tests, he scored a total of 1184 runs, the most by any player.

As the series decider against New Zealand approaches, fans and experts anticipate a strong performance from Babar Azam. New Zealand levelled the three-game series in the second ODI, and Pakistan will be looking to close it out today in the third ODI. The national team will be counting on their captain to step up again after consecutive half-centuries, with 79 in the second ODI, and 66 in the first ODI.

  • Pakistani News Agency reported that PCB would soon take over the captaincy in Tests and ODIs from Babar Azam

Pakistani News Agency reported that PCB would soon take over the captaincy in Tests and ODIs from Babar Azam

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly made the decision to replace Babar Azam as captain of the national team in both the One Day International (ODI) and Test formats.

This comes amid rumors that Babar’s underperformance as captain and the team’s lack of success under his leadership may have played a major role in the decision. During his captaincy, the Men in Green lost three test series at home and lost two finals.

Sarfaraz Ahmed To Replace Babar Azam

Sarfaraz Ahmed, who recently returned to Test cricket after a four-year absence and performed exceptionally well, is expected to take over as captain in the Test format, while vice-captain Shan Masood is likely to become captain in the ODI format.

Shan Masood To Replace Babar Azam

Babar had a wonderful run with the bat in 2022, being the leading run-getter across all formats. However, Babar will continue to captain the team in the Twenty20 International format.

The PCB has undergone several changes recently, including the reappointment of Najam Sethi as the new chairman and the hiring of Shahid Afridi as interim chief selector. Pakistan may opt for different captains in all three formats, according to reports.

Babar Azam seemed enraged with the reporters as he told them he is here to win matches for Pakistan and not answer needless questions that did not relate to the ODI series against New Zealand. There were rumours that Babar Azam did not know that Shan Masood was named the vice-captain of the ODI series by the PCB selection committee headed by Shahid Afridi.

Babar Azam said, “my job is to play cricket and enjoy it. I don’t have to answer anyone or satisfy anybody. I know what my responsibility is. I don’t have to make anyone happy, my job is to help Pakistan win.”

  • Shahid Afridi’s recent comments on the T20 selection criteria have stirred up controversy in Pakistan cricket

Shahid Afridi’s recent comments on the T20 selection criteria have stirred up controversy in Pakistan cricket

“No batter will be selected for the T20 side if his domestic strike rate does not exceed 135” according to Boom Boom Afridi, who is currently the Chief Selector of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s players’ committee.

The former Pakistani captain’s comments have sparked a debate among cricket fans and experts. Some back his stance and others argue that other factors such as technique and temperament should also be taken into account.

Afridi, who retired from international cricket in 2018 after representing Pakistan in over 500 matches, has always been known for his aggressive style of play and high strike rate. He is considered one of the greatest T20 players of all time, having achieved numerous achievements in the format.

However, critics have pointed out that a high strike rate alone does not necessarily make a player a success in T20 cricket. They argue that other factors such as the ability to rotate the strike, build partnerships and adapt to different situations are also crucial.

Despite the criticism, Afridi has defended his comments, saying that a high strike rate is an important indicator of a player’s ability to score runs quickly and put pressure on the opposition.

It remains to be seen how the PCB will respond to Afridi’s comments and whether they will adopt similar selection criteria for the national T20 team. What is certain is that Afridi’s views have sparked a lively debate on the selection criteria for T20 players in Pakistan.

Watch- Simon Doull on Babar Azam, “He wants to bat on road and improve his stats”

Pak vs NZ 2nd Test is currently in the balance and most likely heading towards a draw due to the Karachi pitch, which offers nothing to the bowlers. The pitch for the 2nd Test had a bit of grass on it on the first two days when New Zealand was batting at the crease. However, it is rumoured that the curators had used a heavy roller on the pitch before the start of the 3rd day of the Test to completely evaporate all the help for the bowlers.

    Simon-Doull-Babar-Azam

It seems that Simon Doull has recognised this fact. The former Kiwi pacer was doing the commentary on the third day of the Test match and said something very shocking. His remark has caused outrage among the fans of Babar Azam, but many cricketing experts also agree with him as well.

Here is the video of Simon Doull saying Babar Azam wants to bat on the road to improve his own stats:

The other commentator laughed it off, and we did not get the answer to this serious question which Simon Doull posed. The accountability regarding the pitches in Pakistan has been a topic of hot discussion, and the new Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) regime needs to sort out this matter as soon as possible to avoid the wrath of the cricketing fans.
