Teams are keeping an eye on players who have recently performed well. Currently, various T20 leagues are ongoing worldwide, with players showcasing their talents. These players include New Zealand’s Finn Allen, former Australian captain Steve Smith, and USA’s star bowler Saurabh Netravalkar. All three players impressed with their performances in Major League Cricket 2024. If these players enter the IPL mega auction, they could command high bids.

Finn Allen (New Zealand) (IPL 2025)

Finn Allen was the third-highest run-scorer in Major League Cricket 2024. He batted explosively throughout the season, scoring 306 runs in 9 innings at an average of 34 and a strike rate of 187.73. Allen notched up one century and two fifties during the season.

Finn Allen hails from New Zealand and has previously played in the IPL, but he went unsold in the last auction. This time, teams will be eager to acquire him. In the mega auction, he could attract bids worth millions as he fulfills the role of a powerful opener for any team.

    Steve Smith (Australia)

Steve Smith was the second top-scorer of the season, delivering remarkable performances. As captain of Washington Freedom, Smith scored 336 runs in 9 matches at an average of 56.00 and a strike rate of 148. He hit three fifties and played as an opening batsman, providing quick starts alongside Travis Head, leading his team to victory.

Steve Smith is known as a player for ODIs and Tests. He went unsold in the IPL 2024 auction and was subsequently left out of Australia’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad. However, following his strong performance in Major League Cricket, Smith is expected to be in high demand in the IPL 2025 mega auction.

How Many Retentions will be Allowed in IPL 2025 Auction? Details Revealed

The IPL 2025 auction is poised to be a landmark event with crucial discussions that could significantly alter team strategies and dynamics. The Governing Council’s upcoming meeting with franchise owners in Mumbai will focus on key issues such as player retention and team purse adjustments. Here’s an in-depth look at what could be in store for the IPL 2025 auction.

How Many Retentions will be Allowed in IPL 2025 Auction? Details Revealed

    Team Purse Set for Increase

A consensus is emerging around the need to boost the team purse for IPL 2025. Currently set at Rs 100 crore, franchise owners are advocating for a 20 to 25 percent increase. Many insiders believe that raising the amount to between Rs 120 crore and Rs 125 crore would be fair and beneficial. A senior franchise official, speaking anonymously, confirmed this likelihood, stating, “The standard increase should be anywhere between 20 to 25 percent. Most franchises would agree to it.”

    The Debate Over Player Retentions

The more contentious issue lies in player retention strategies. Currently, teams can retain up to four players, comprising three Indian and one overseas player. However, several franchises are pushing for an increase in the number of retentions to ensure continuity and team stability.

One prominent franchise has proposed allowing up to eight retentions, including Right To Match (RTM) options. This suggestion, though bold, is expected to face resistance from other teams with different needs and strategies. According to sources, most teams are advocating for a retention limit between five to six players, including one or two RTM cards. There’s also a push to include at least one uncapped player to foster fresh talent.

Overseas Retention and the Impact Player Rule

A particular point of contention is the retention of overseas players. Teams like the Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad, which have high-value overseas players, are seeking more flexibility in this area. Delhi Capitals, for instance, have rising stars like Jake Fraser-McGurk and Tristan Stubbs, while Sunrisers Hyderabad boasts players such as Pat Cummins and Heinrich Klaasen. The demand for additional overseas retentions highlights the diverse strategies teams are employing to build competitive squads.

Another hot topic is the ‘Impact Player’ rule, which allows teams to field 12 players in a match. This rule has sparked debate regarding its impact on the development of all-rounders and the overall balance of the team. While players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have expressed concerns about how this rule might affect the growth of all-rounders, others see potential benefits. For instance, Chennai Super Kings could use the rule to extend Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s career, offering him a strategic advantage in critical matches.

The Governing Council of the Indian Premier League held a meeting in Mumbai on Wednesday. In this meeting with the franchise owners, there can be a consensus on increasing the team’s purse (the amount spent on players) to INR 120 crore and retaining six players in the team including ‘Right to Match’ (RTM) options. There will be a big auction of players for IPL at the end of this year. Before this, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will discuss with the team owners to organize the modalities of this league.

From Retention to Impact Rule... Here is Everything That Can Happen in the Meeting for IPL 2025

BCCI will take into account the views of the franchise owners before deciding the rules on team formation. The report said that many franchises were talked to and almost everyone agreed on one aspect that the current team’s purse of INR 100 crore needs to be increased by at least 20 to 25 percent. An IPL franchise said on the condition of anonymity, ‘I think this (increase in purse) is definitely happening. There should be an increase of 25 percent. In such a situation, most franchises will agree to a purse of INR 120 crore to INR 125 crore for the franchise.’

RTM will be the main issue of the meeting

The biggest issue in this meeting is to retain the players, where it may be difficult to reach a consensus as most teams have different requirements. A big franchise has suggested retaining eight players in the team including RTM. It is unlikely that most teams will not agree to this. The auction to be held in the three-year cycle of IPL allows the retention of four players including one foreigner. It is believed that most teams want retention between five to six.

    Maxwell’s Roller-Coaster IPL Journey

Maxwell’s IPL journey has been marked by highs and lows. In the 2023 season, he was in formidable form, amassing 400 runs in 14 innings, showcasing his explosive batting and versatile bowling. However, the 2024 season proved to be a stark contrast, with Maxwell managing only 52 runs in 10 matches. This dip in performance has sparked questions about his consistency and value to the team.

The Unfollow: A Signal of Change?

Unfollowing RCB on Instagram might seem trivial, but in modern sports, social media gestures often carry significant weight. Fans and analysts alike have been quick to interpret this move as a precursor to Maxwell’s potential release from the team. With the IPL 2025 mega auction approaching, teams are expected to make strategic decisions to balance their rosters, and RCB might be considering freeing up funds for younger talent or different team dynamics.

    The Implications for RCB

For RCB, letting go of a player like Maxwell could be a double-edged sword. On one hand, his departure would free up a considerable portion of their budget, allowing for the acquisition of emerging players who could bring fresh energy and new skills to the team. On the other hand, Maxwell’s experience and ability to turn a game around with his all-round capabilities are assets that are not easily replaced.

The Bigger Picture: IPL Mega Auction Dynamics

The IPL mega auction is a critical event for all franchises, serving as a reset button for team compositions. It’s a time when franchises reassess their strategies, release underperforming players, and bid on new talent to create a balanced and competitive squad. Maxwell, known for his explosive batting, crafty bowling, and sharp fielding, will undoubtedly attract interest from other teams if he becomes available. His journey across various franchises in the IPL underscores his value as a seasoned T20 player capable of making a significant impact.

BCCI Must Change This Rule to Allow Dhoni to Play in IPL 2025! Chennai Super Kings Make Big Demand

Big Update on Dhoni Playing in IPL 2025

Dhoni will play in the next IPL season only if a specific rule is implemented before the auction. According to a report by Cricbuzz, if the BCCI allows teams to retain five to six players before the next season, then Dhoni will play. Currently, teams can retain only four players before the mega auction. If the BCCI changes this rule, Dhoni could be seen playing in the IPL again.

Chennai Super Kings might retain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana, and Shivam Dube if the current rule of four retentions remains. If the rule changes to allow more retentions, Dhoni could be retained as the fifth or sixth player. IPL 2025: Major Changes in Mega Auction- Increase in Purse, RTMs and More

The IPL 2025 mega auction might bring some big changes, including ones never seen before. IPL team owners are expected to meet with the BCCI by the end of July at the newly revamped BCCI office at Wankhede Stadium.

IPL 2025: Major Changes in Mega Auction- Increase in Purse, RTMs and More

One of the main changes could be an increase in the purse value for teams. Currently, the salary cap in the IPL is set at INR 90 crore, but it might go up to around Rs 130-140 crore, according to a report in the Times of India.

A source mentioned that the IPL 2025 and 2026 seasons will have 84 matches, and IPL 2027 will have 94 matches. With more games, players are likely to ask for higher salaries.

Major changes ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction
“It has been pending for a while. The salary cap is likely to be increased from Rs 90 crore to Rs 130-140 crore. According to the media rights agreement in 2002, IPL 2025 and 2026 will have 84 matches, while IPL 2027 will have 94 matches. This means more matches with fewer gaps between them. Players will expect more money,” the source told TOI.

In the meeting between IPL team owners and BCCI, there will be some major talking points. Franchises want the option to renegotiate a player’s salary after he’s bought. Currently, there is no way to increase or decrease a player’s salary once he’s bought. A player bought for INR 30 lakhs will stay on that salary, but franchises want to be able to increase players’ salaries if they perform well.

“The current system doesn’t allow a player’s salary to be increased by a franchise once he’s bought in the IPL auction. Like most jobs, there’s no provision for a pay raise. If he’s bought for Rs 30 lakh and has an outstanding IPL, the franchise should be able to offer him, say, a Rs 3 crore contract for the next year, rather than lose him to another team. This will prevent poaching by other teams,” a franchise official said in the report.

The official also said that allowing franchises to renegotiate players’ contracts would help teams keep their best players without worrying that the player will seek a trade for a bigger pay.

Mega auction every 5 years, 5 retention picks, and 8 RTMs

In another big development, franchises have asked IPL CEO Hemang Amin to conduct the IPL mega auction every five years, with 5 retention picks allowed per side. Additionally, each franchise should have 8 right-to-match (RTM) options.

While some franchises wanted up to 8 retentions, only 5 are likely to be approved by BCCI, with discussions on the number of RTM picks each side will have.
