  • Will MS Dhoni be CSK’s Mentor or a Player in IPL 2025?

Will MS Dhoni be CSK’s Mentor or a Player in IPL 2025?

MS Dhoni may have played his last match for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Even the rumour of this would shock the cricket community, especially diehard CSK and Dhoni fans. The signs have been there for a while. When the wicketkeeper-batter retired from international cricket, it was clear this day would come.

Will MS Dhoni be CSK's Mentor or a Player in IPL 2025?

His knee injury in 2023 brought this future closer, and handing the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad confirmed it. Yet, after every game, Dhoni was still full of energy, defying age, injuries, and expectations. Dhoni still wants to wear the yellow jersey again, but this time, it might not be up to him.

Are MS Dhoni’s playing days over?
The legendary captain’s participation in the IPL 2025 season doesn’t depend on his fitness or form but on a meeting. The upcoming discussion between the BCCI and the IPL franchise owners on July 31 will decide his future.

According to Cricbuzz, Dhoni has talked about his future with the franchise owner, N Srinivasan. They agreed that Dhoni’s participation in the next season will depend on the number of players the franchise can retain before the IPL 2025 mega auction.

After the meeting in Mumbai, we’ll know how many players each franchise can keep. If the number is five or more, Dhoni will continue as CSK’s wicketkeeper. However, if they can only retain four or fewer players, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana, and Shivam Dube will be chosen over Dhoni.

One thing is certain: Dhoni will continue to be the face of CSK. If he doesn’t play in the IPL 2025 season, he will still be in the dugout as their mentor. Dhoni and CSK have been linked since the league started in 2008, and that partnership won’t end soon. His role might change, but he’ll always be at the centre of the Chennai Super Kings.

  • IPL 2025 Mega Auction- Likely Purse for Every Team

IPL 2025 Mega Auction- Likely Purse for Every Team

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is gearing up for a mega auction later this year in preparation for the 2025 season, as franchises look to overhaul their squads. The last mega auction occurred in 2022, and with the three-season cycle now complete, most players will re-enter the auction pool, offering a fresh start for all teams.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has solicited suggestions from IPL owners for proposed changes ahead of a meeting later this month at the BCCI office in Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

IPL 2025 Mega Auction- Likely Purse for Every Team

One of the key questions is the likely player purse for teams at the IPL 2025 mega auction. According to reports, franchises have suggested that the salary of a player bought at a certain price in the auction should increase significantly if they perform well in upcoming seasons. For instance, a player acquired for around 40 lakhs could see their value rise to crores with a strong performance in the IPL 2025 season.

“The current system doesn’t allow for a player’s salary to be increased by a franchise once he’s bought in the IPL auction. Like most jobs, there’s no provision for increment. Suppose he’s bought for Rs 30 lakh and has an outstanding IPL; the franchise should have the option of offering him, say, a Rs 3 crore fresh contract for the next year, rather than lose him to another team. This will prevent poaching by other teams,” an official told TOI.

Allowing franchises to renegotiate the salaries of high-performing players would enable teams to retain their best players from the previous season without the fear of losing them to other teams. This system would make players happy with the increased earnings and help franchises avoid poaching.

Additionally, there have been suggestions to increase the player purse for IPL 2025. Some franchise owners have proposed to IPL CEO Hemang Amin and BCCI officials that the salary cap for each team be increased significantly, from Rs 90 crores to approximately Rs 130-140 crores.

“The salary cap for each team is set to witness a massive increase—from Rs 90 crores to around Rs 130-140 crores,” according to a TOI report. “This has been pending for a while. The salary cap is likely to be increased from Rs 90 crores to Rs 130-140 crores. As per the media rights agreement in 2022, IPL 2025 and 2026 will see 84 matches, while IPL 2027 will include 94 matches. This means more matches with little gap between them. The players are bound to ask for and expect more money,” the source added.

The final decision will be made after the meeting between BCCI officials and franchise owners at the end of this month.

The Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) might be quite different from previous editions, offering fans an even more thrilling experience. The IPL 2025 mega auction is expected to take place between December 2024 and February 2025, potentially bringing changes in player retention policies.

Several teams might also see changes in their captaincy. One such scenario involves Lucknow Super Giants’ captain KL Rahul. If Lucknow Super Giants do not retain KL Rahul, several teams, including Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans, and Royal Challengers Bangalore, will be keen to acquire him.

    Punjab Kings
Punjab Kings are looking for a fresh start. The team may not extend their contract with coach Trevor Bayliss, and they might not retain captain Shikhar Dhawan either. In this context, KL Rahul could be an excellent option for Punjab. He can make a significant impact as an opener and also handle wicketkeeping duties effectively.

    Gujarat Titans
Gujarat Titans had a rough season recently. After winning the championship in their debut season, the team faced early setbacks this time around. With their wicketkeepers Wriddhiman Saha and Matthew Wade likely not being retained, KL Rahul could be a valuable addition. He might even be handed the team’s captaincy.

    Royal Challengers Bangalore
Royal Challengers Bangalore are also looking for some changes. KL Rahul has previously played for the team and had a good record with the bat. There is talk of him potentially replacing Faf du Plessis as captain. Additionally, with Dinesh Karthik expected to retire and take up a role as a batting mentor, a spot for KL Rahul as a wicketkeeper could open up. This makes Rahul a perfect fit for Royal Challengers Bangalore.

    Ruturaj Gaikwad
MS Dhoni handed over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad just before IPL 2024, intending to groom the Indian opener for the role. Although Dhoni hasn’t officially announced his retirement from the league, it’s expected that he won’t play in IPL 2025. In Dhoni’s absence, Gaikwad is set to be the next leader. With this significant responsibility, Gaikwad will undoubtedly be CSK’s first retention.

    Ravindra Jadeja
With the change in leadership, Ravindra Jadeja’s experience will be crucial in the team’s rebuilding phase. CSK has always valued a strong and consistent core, and Jadeja has long been part of this core. Despite retiring from the T20I format, Jadeja is expected to continue playing in the IPL for at least two to three more years. CSK will likely retain this all-rounder to maintain stability in the squad.

According to reports, Jaffer will return to the Mohali-based franchise. Which is co-owned by Bollywood actress Preity Zinta. Jaffer, the all-time top scorer in Ranji Trophy history, is not new to Punjab Kings management. He has previously served as the team’s batting coach (2019-21) and batting consultant (2023).

The former batsman has undertaken several coaching programmes after retiring from competitive cricket. He served as the batting coach of the Bangladesh youth team, and has also been the head coach of Uttarakhand and Odisha in the Indian domestic circuit.

Former England head coach Bayliss, who has also won two IPL titles as Kolkata Knight Riders head coach in 2012 and 2014, joined Punjab Kings as head coach on a two-year deal ahead of IPL 2023. But during his tenure, he failed to deliver the results the franchise deserved and the team finished 8th (2023) and 9th (2024) in the points table.

    2. IPL 2025: Mega Auction in 5 Years, 8 RTMs- Here’s What Franchise Owners are Demanding

IPL 2025: Mega Auction in 5 Years, 8 RTMs- Here’s What Franchise Owners are Demanding

Franchises have proposed that the IPL conduct mega auctions every five years instead of the current three-year cycle. They suggest allowing teams to retain four to six players and giving each franchise eight right-to-match (RTM) options. This longer gap between mega auctions would help teams build continuity and develop young players, particularly uncapped Indians, without the risk of losing them to rival franchises. The proposal also includes permitting franchises to renegotiate player salaries between auctions, ensuring transparency while keeping the player under contract. IPL officials are expected to discuss these suggestions with franchises soon.

IPL 2025: Mega Auction in 5 Years, 8 RTMs- Here's What Franchise Owners are Demanding

      Demands of IPL Franchise Owners

Franchises have suggested holding IPL mega auctions every five years instead of the current three-year cycle. They propose that teams retain four to six players and have eight right-to-match (RTM) options. This approach would allow teams to build continuity and develop young, uncapped Indian players, reducing the risk of losing them to rivals. It also suggests enabling franchises to renegotiate player salaries between auctions, ensuring transparency while keeping players under contract.

Historically, the IPL has had four-year cycles between mega auctions twice in the last decade. The upcoming 2025 auction will be the first mega auction since 2022. Some franchises propose retaining one key player, such as a captain, and using RTMs for the rest, allowing market-driven pricing and potentially reducing player dissatisfaction.

Another idea is to use a combination of player retention and RTMs, similar to the 2018 auction. However, this could create issues if players retained before the auction end up with lower bids compared to those bought back via RTMs. There is also debate about having eight RTM options with no pre-auction retentions, which could level the playing field but also drive up prices and disrupt auction strategies.

Franchise officials emphasize the need for long-term player retention to build fan loyalty and continuity. The IPL is expected to discuss these proposals, along with other matters like the Impact Player rule, auction purse, and salary cap adjustments, in an upcoming meeting with franchises.

A mega auction will be organized this year before the 18th season of IPL. During this, the franchise will have to retain and release the players. Teams demanded changes in three rules

According to media reports, the franchises recently met the IPL officials. During this, the teams demanded changes in three rules of IPL. In this meeting held before the mega auction, the franchises demanded to extend the duration of the mega auction by five years. Apart from this, teams should be allowed to retain four to six players and each team should be given the option of at least eight Right to Match (RTM). However, no decision has been taken so far.

What will be the benefit of the duration of the mega auction?

The reason behind the demand to conduct the mega auction every five years is that it will give young players a chance to prepare. This will benefit the uncapped players and they will be able to improve their game. Let us tell you, at present the IPL mega auction takes place every three years.

Not KKR! But Dravid Might Become the Head Coach of this IPL Team; Official Announcement to be made Soon

With India winning the T20 World Cup 2024, Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach ended. Dravid was replaced by Gautam Gambhir, who was the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2024. Recently there was a discussion that after Gambhir’s departure, Dravid could get a big responsibility in KKR. However, now an important news has come out, in which it was told that Dravid may join Rajasthan Royals (RR) and not KKR. He can be seen taking over the responsibility of RR’s head coach in IPL 2025.

Not KKR! But Dravid Might Become the Head Coach of this IPL Team; Official Announcement to be made Soon

According to reports, 51-year-old Dravid is likely to return to RR. A reliable source said, “Talks are going on between RR and Dravid and an announcement in this regard will be made soon.” Dravid has had a long relationship with RR. He has been the captain of RR. Under his captaincy, the franchise reached the Champions League T20 final and IPL playoffs in the year 2013. He also served as mentor in 2014 and 2015 and both the time, the team finished third. After his recent success, the RR management will once again appoint him.

However, it is not clear if the franchise will retain Kumar Sangakkara if Dravid joins RR. Sangakkara has been the Royals’ Director of Cricket since 2021. Former captain and veteran batsman Dravid has been associated with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) since 2015.

He was the head coach of the India Under-19 and India ‘A’ teams. He then became the chairman of the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He took over as the head coach of the Indian senior team from October 2021.

Dravid had made it clear even before the start of the T20 World Cup that he would not apply for the post of head coach again. Actually, Dravid did not want to keep himself away from the family by traveling 10 months a year as a coach.

On the other hand, the case is different in IPL. In IPL, Dravid will need to stay with the franchise for only 2-3 months a year. In such a situation, he will be able to give more time to his family. He played 89 matches in the 2008 to 2013 IPL, scoring 2174 runs with the help of 11 half-centuries.

Punjab Kings in the Mood to End Partnership with Trevor Bayliss; The Franchise is Looking for an Indian Coach

After Ricky Ponting, another Australian coach is unlikely to get a contract extension from the Indian Premier League and Punjab Kings do not want to extend their contract with Trevor Bayliss. Before the mega auction of IPL 2025, Punjab Kings can officially announce that Trevor Bayliss will not be the head coach of their team next season. Punjab team is looking for an Indian coach.

Trevor Bayliss had a two-year contract with Punjab Kings, which has ended. If reports are to be believed, the franchise is in no mood to renew it. According to sources, PBKS is looking for an Indian coach to guide the team.

Punjab Kings in the Mood to End Partnership with Trevor Bayliss; The Franchise is Looking for an Indian Coach

Whether they will eventually choose an Indian coach or not remains to be seen, but it is believed that they are considering several options, one of which is Sanjay Bangar, who was previously the head coach of the franchise and is currently the Director of Cricket Development and he is one of the potential candidates at the moment.

The decision in this regard was to be taken in the board meeting to be held on July 22, but the meeting could not be held. It is believed that the franchise will look for a coach before the mega auction to be held later this year.

Rahul Dravid’s remarkable achievements with the Indian team, the contribution of the Gautam Gambhir and Chandrakant Pandit pair in Kolkata Knight Riders’ title win last season and Ashish Nehra’s successful association with Gujarat Titans, all these reasons have made Indian coaches the demand of the time.

This is the reason why he is also in great demand in IPL franchises. Apart from these, Sourav Ganguly is playing an important role in the coaching staff of Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore has included Dinesh Karthik in its coaching team for the upcoming season.

61-year-old Trevor Bayliss has also been a part of the coaching staff of Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad, but this coach who brought success to England does not have a good record in T20 cricket. However, PBKS has not yet made a final call on him. A decision will be taken on him after reviewing last year’s performance.

According to reports, the franchise has no problem with the Australian coach, but ultimately the result matters, which he has not been able to get in the last two years. The team has not even reached the playoffs.
