While Rishabh Pant made history as the most expensive buy in IPL history, joining Lucknow Super Giants for INR 27 crore, 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest player ever to be purchased, signing with Rajasthan Royals. However, despite the excitement, some high-profile names went unsold during the auction.

1. Lucknow Super Giants: Rishabh Pant (Rs 27 crore)
Pant, who was released by Delhi Capitals (DC), was purchased by LSG after an intense bidding war involving Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Delhi. This marks Pant’s first move away from his hometown franchise. His transfer eclipsed Mitchell Starc’s Rs 24.75 crore price from the previous year, setting a new auction record. Pant is expected to captain LSG for the 2025 season.

2. Punjab Kings: Shreyas Iyer (Rs 26.75 crore)
After being released by KKR, Iyer returned to the IPL with a massive Rs 26.75 crore deal from Punjab Kings. Despite leading KKR to their third title in 2024, he was not retained by the franchise. Punjab, searching for a marquee player and potential captain, likely has Iyer in mind for leadership duties in 2025.

3. Kolkata Knight Riders: Venkatesh Iyer (Rs 23.75 crore)
In a surprise move, KKR spent Rs 23.75 crore to bring back Venkatesh Iyer. The all-rounder, who played a key role in KKR’s IPL 2024 title win, was not retained by the team but rejoined after a bidding battle with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

4. Gujarat Titans: Jos Buttler (Rs 15.75 crore)
England’s Jos Buttler fetched Rs 15.75 crore from Gujarat Titans in a competitive bidding war. Buttler, who was released by Rajasthan Royals, brings his vast experience and leadership qualities to Gujarat after several successful seasons with Rajasthan and Mumbai Indians.

5. Delhi Capitals: KL Rahul (Rs 14 crore)
KL Rahul, who had a base price of Rs 2 crore, was the most expensive buy for Delhi Capitals, who secured him for Rs 14 crore. After being released by LSG, Rahul is expected to take over the captaincy from Rishabh Pant, who was not retained by Delhi.

6. Rajasthan Royals: Jofra Archer (Rs 12.50 crore)
Rajasthan Royals acquired England pacer Jofra Archer for Rs 12.50 crore. Archer returns to the IPL after a long injury hiatus and adds experience and skill to the Royals’ bowling attack.

7. Mumbai Indians: Trent Boult (Rs 12.50 crore)
Mumbai Indians bagged New Zealand pacer Trent Boult for Rs 12.50 crore. Boult, known for his early breakthroughs, reunites with former MI teammate Jasprit Bumrah, forming a formidable fast-bowling duo once again.

8. Royal Challengers Bangalore: Josh Hazlewood (Rs 12.50 crore)
RCB secured Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood for Rs 12.5 crore. Hazlewood, who had a successful stint with RCB in 2021, is set to lead their pace attack in 2025, bringing added experience to their bowling department.

9. Sunrisers Hyderabad: Ishan Kishan (Rs 11.25 crore)
Ishan Kishan moved to SRH for Rs 11.25 crore, a significant decrease from the Rs 15.25 crore Mumbai Indians paid for him in 2022. Despite Mumbai starting the bidding, SRH outbid other teams to sign the wicketkeeper-batter.

10. Chennai Super Kings: Noor Ahmad (Rs 10 crore)
Chennai Super Kings secured Afghanistan’s young spinner Noor Ahmad for Rs 10 crore after a bidding war with Mumbai Indians. Ahmad’s acquisition, along with Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, strengthens CSK’s spin-bowling department for the 2025 season.

This year’s IPL auction saw franchises making strategic purchases, strengthening their squads in preparation for the upcoming season.

Deepak Chahar is set to play for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2025, marking his third team in the league after the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). After RPS was dissolved following the 2017 season, Chahar moved to CSK, where he became an integral part of their bowling attack under MS Dhoni.

Since his IPL debut in 2016, Chahar has played 81 matches, taking 77 wickets at an economy rate of 7.98, including two four-wicket hauls. His standout season came in 2019, when he took 22 wickets in 17 games at an economy rate of 7.47. Dhoni often used him in the powerplay, where Chahar consistently delivered strong performances.

However, Chahar has faced injury setbacks in recent years. He missed the entire 2022 season due to a right quadriceps injury and had another injury concern last season, limiting him to just eight matches. His absence contributed to CSK’s failure to qualify for the playoffs, as their bowling attack was weakened.

During Day 2 of the auction, the bidding for Chahar began with Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians. As the price reached ₹7.75 crore, Chennai Super Kings joined the race, raising the bid to ₹8 crore. After a tense bidding war between MI and CSK, Mumbai Indians secured the pacer for ₹9.25 crore.

Chahar’s new deal marks a 34% pay cut, as he was last bought by CSK for ₹14 crore. Nonetheless, MI will gain great value from his inclusion, adding him to their pace attack alongside Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah, further strengthening their squad.

Mumbai Indians were also in the bidding war for Bhuvneshwar Kumar, but he was eventually purchased by RCB for ₹10.75 crore.

The IPL 2025 Mega Auction is scheduled for November 24-25, with 574 players from across the world shortlisted. Star players like Jos Buttler, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Glenn Maxwell, and Shreyas Iyer will be part of the auction. While there are speculations that players like Pant and Buttler could fetch the highest bids, there are also some big names in the cricketing world who may not attract huge amounts in the auction.

Piyush Chawla – In the last two seasons, Piyush Chawla has taken 35 wickets in 27 matches for Mumbai Indians. In the previous season, MI paid him ₹50 lakh to play. However, in the era of young and dynamic bowlers, Piyush’s name seems to be fading. Despite having 192 wickets in IPL history, he may not fetch a high price in the auction, and there’s even a possibility of him going unsold.

Ajinkya Rahane – Known for his Test cricket style and slower strike rate, Rahane impressed in 2023 when he joined Chennai Super Kings, scoring at a strike rate of 172.49. However, in 2024, he disappointed, and his IPL strike rate remains below 124. Given this, franchises may bid very low for him.

Kane Williamson – Similar to Rahane, Kane Williamson’s slow strike rate could lead to a lower bid. He was part of Gujarat Titans last season and received ₹2 crore for his participation. In 2024, he scored only 111 runs in 6 matches for New Zealand. His poor form and low strike rate could mean a reduced bid for him in the auction.

Vijay Shankar – Vijay Shankar has been playing for Gujarat Titans in the last three seasons. In 2024, he managed only 83 runs in 7 matches, without contributing much with the ball. While his first-class career statistics are strong, the era of impact players might affect the bid for this fast-bowling all-rounder.

Ishant Sharma – Ishant Sharma has set his base price at ₹75 lakh for the mega auction. He has been with Delhi Capitals since 2019 but was released this season. In the past two seasons, his performance has been underwhelming, and he didn’t even get a chance to play all matches. It’s unlikely that he will attract a bid in the millions this time.
